Write about your Round

I had one of those magical rounds you hear about. I think @jon would call it a 3/3 round. And it just so happened to occur in a tournament!

I shot 62 (-6, my home course is a par 68). It was the first round I’ve ever gone bogey-free. I had 12 pars and 6 birdies. I hit 14 GIR, 26 putts, and was 4/4 on up and downs. Our GM, Club President and son of the tournament namesake all believe I set the tournament record score!

The tournament field was really good, with lots of really good local players. Fortunately for me, our course is not that easy for the guys who only play it 1-2 times per year. The next best score was 67.

Just a surreal weekend after making my first hole-in-one yesterday then winning a tournament today!

I got in one more (hopefully) practice round on my home course #2, until hc#1 opens, hopefully next week. It was a +4.5 hr round. Key takeaways:

  • The double interlock putting grip has served its purpose. It reinforced the “accelerating square club face technique. That’s a plus. Now back to regular programming.

  • I found that by slightly altering stance, I can consistently hit baby draws/fades within 3-5 yards of one another. Same in to out swing, just slightly opening-closing stance.

  • Fairway play needs some work, but happy with par 3 play.

  • This “Jon Sherman Hit To The Back Of The Green” approach really works. Especially on cool, windy days. Don’t try to be cute. Be effective. Clearly, it helps having the Garmin F/C/B yardages, but you need the mindset.

As a follow up. The course, Glen Oak, in East Amherst, NY is a RTJ design dating to late 1960s. The original intent was to be a private club ringed by residential development but it never transitioned into a private club.

As I understand it, part of RTJ’s design was to have the perimeter of the course ringed with wide walking paths to accommodate the community residents. It was a nice concept, but it went wrong.

The course layout is basically clockwise. The walking/cart paths are to the “outside”, to the left of the fairways. Which can present a problem, since (anecdotally) most golfers hit to the right. On days, like today, where it’s ‘cart path only’ this creates a lot of walking from cart in left rough to my ball in right rough.

Hence the excruciatingly long rounds

I had a much better day on the greens yesterday. I had 28 putts and for the first time this year, I had zero three putts! I did miss one short putt that lipped out, but other than that I was pleased.

Golf is hard. 3rd 18 completed this season and 3rd 18 finished since august.

I have many broken 80 and today lost focus after 1 bad hole… need to work on some things and have a lesson tomorrow…

I also ordered new shoes… might have been my shoes fault.

88 with no birdies and just mediocre golf after the 5th hole… had some decent shots through 5 and was 1 over with a dumb bogey and a missed easy birdie putt.

Oh well. More golf to play this week!

Get some True Linkswear shoes. I made a hole-in-one and shot 6 under this weekend. I had never done both prior to getting Trues, so it has to be the shoes.

They don’t make them wide enough for me… it’s pretty much new balance or foot joy.

Sunday afternoon I shot a 74 at my club. What excites/frustrates/drives me crazy is that I had 4-3 putts and a water ball on a par 3. Had 3 birdies. When I realized that I could have shot a 69 without these mistakes i was very excited. All the work is paying off. All the learning and applying is bearing fruit.
13 FW’s, 12 GIR, 32 putts.

That’s, to me, a pretty decent Springtime round. It’s tough to keep your mind in it for several hours when you’re not bringing your A game. Or, B game, for that matter. Go get 'em next round!

So far this year I am struggling. I’m hitting pretty solid, but tending to hit a pull draw or a block…whatever results in me being in the worst spot possible lol. Even when I hit it well it doesn’t work out. 1st hole last night I hit nice drive dead center of fairway. 105 to back pin into the wind. I would normally hit SW, but the wind is blowing decently so I use GW. I’m posing on it as it carries too far and long at my course is a tough recovery. My par putt lips out. That was my whole 9 holes, just making bogeys. I am an 18, but just annoying I couldn’t make even 1 par. On the plus side I played with a new member who was fun to hang out with and hits the ball like a pro. His shots sounded like the pros. The 1st hole was probably playing 350 with the wind and he drove it up close to the front. He hit driver off the deck to get on the par 5 3rd in 2. Into the wind from about 250 he butter cut one in there. It was fun to watch.

Shot 80 and only hit 5 greens

Scrambling was on getting up and down 6/10… was actually very pleased with the four I did not convert as I got the ball into the 6-10 ft range from some tough spots and made good runs at par

Had to hit 7 punch outs :face_vomiting:… fortunately was able to get about half of these within 20 yards of the green

The Originals are EEE width. I find them to be much wider than Footjoy.

My league opened up last night with a scramble, opportunity to meet/bond with teammates. I got moved up a division, so I was a little nervous heading into the season. The scramble showed me that I belong as long as I keep my head together.

Two highlights: with a good 2nd shot about 75 yards out on a par 5 (windy day) I hit a driver off the deck the best I ever have and nearly put it on the green. I did it so well that my team goaded me into doing it again a few holes later with the same result.

The other highlight was a teammate who holed out from 165 yards for eagle on a par 4. Might be the best shot I’ve ever witnessed in my life. And it won us the night so he’s my new favorite teammate!

I’ll give them another look… I wear 4E generally, and have tried lots of shoes… I have a pair of the old, old True Links, and they are sized 15 and are wide enough… they just look like clown shoes, as they are VERY long.

On my post round post mortem, I took a lesson this morning, and my coach suggested I get my weight more on my toes (and into a more athletic position) and it seems to have helped… we had to do it on the indoor simulator, as we got snow last night…

Hoping to get in a round on Friday and try it out in the real world.

What’s the deal with these golf leagues? I’ve never in my life seen one of these or have any idea how they work. Are you broken into teams and play matches against other teams? Are the other teams from other clubs or courses? From what I can gather, these are pretty common but it’s never been a thing at any club I’ve been a member at other than inter club matches when I was a junior.
