They are popular around here. Usually an after work league with 2-man teams. Generally 9 hole match play is the main ingredient with stroke play, skins, et al added in. Some are pretty serious while others are drinking leagues with golfing problems.
Thatās a shame. Theyāre a lot of fun. Iām in two. One at a public course with some friends thatās more for the fun of it. The other at my club thatās super competitive. Fun one is four man teams. Other is two man teams. Both are scored head to head match play and stroke play (net), then low net score gets a point. Something like 24 weeks with playoffs and championship. Fun league we have a traveling title belt for winning team. Club league gives out trophies and super nice prizes.
There is a zero percent chance I could commit to that much golf. I donāt think I could commit to 25% of that.
Theyāre my sanity appointments. My one(two) guaranteed times per week I know I get me time and can play golf with other adult humans. Working from home and having a two year old doesnāt allow a ton of opportunities. Luckily my wife gets it and knows I gotta get out and play golf at least once a week and is super supportive of it.
We had our 1st night of my Wednsday league last night. It was 45 degrees and windy, so I was ecstatic to shoot a 40. Putted out of my mind though, only 12 putts!
I started on golf in a 9-hole after work league and love them. That used to be my only golf for a # of years as I didnāt have much more time due to family and work. I really love match play as it allows me to have my blowup holes and still compete lol.
Iāve really enjoyed getting into leagues. I played in one for a few years, two divisions and every week was just a nine hole match with strokes.
A few years ago I joined a club, and every Tuesday afternoon the course closes all 3 nines for our league. Itās called āScratch Leagueā not that you need to be scratch (Iām far from it) but when we play itās without strokes. There are 3 divisions, 4 teams per division, and most weeks are a different format with a partner (best ball, shamble, modified alt shot, etc.) and once a month is Medal Night. Every league night in each division the top 2 teams cash, as well as skins and closest to the pins. Then there are both season long team and individual standings.
As a golf addict who also has trouble getting out a lot between work and a 2 year old, itās nice knowing Iāll play at least once a week in a fun but also competitive format. I graduated up to D2 this year, which was a little intimidating but Iām hoping that playing with lower handicaps will help me grow more!
I play hooky when I can (9 hole rounds around lunch)
Just hope I donāt get sh** canned by the boss man!!
When I was āworkinā for a livināā, I would push out a half dozen or so emails in the morning. Then traipsed to local muni for nine holes. By the time I returned, I dealt with those emails that had responded. Of course, I was self employed and working from home, soā¦
A club I belonged to had a Tuesday night menās golf league. All slots were filled, but I showed up every Tuesday. Sometimes Iād get recruited to fill in on the spot, other times players would ābookā me in advance as a sub. I played damned near every week. I loved it because it gave me a chance to play with golfers not in my regular Saturday four ball. It was a great opportunity to make new friends.
2nd night of league last night. Shot 33, so no complaints on a night where it was 50Ā° and gusting 25mph - aside from being totally screwed the rest of the year with a plus handicap playing other A players that are 5s and 6s.
My game is really dialed in for it being so early in the season, so Iām very happy about that. I am finding I really need to work on my putting on slow greens from 25+ feet because I can not get a putt of that distance to the hole to save my life - or really even into gimme range. I left probably a 50 footer about 12 feet short and another maybe 35 footer 8 or so feet short last night. Made a couple ballsy two putts on those, but I have to do better at lag putting.
Another club team play tournament today and ācompetitiveā (using that term very loosely) is definitely feeling more comfortable. Was pretty good off the tee and meh on approaches. Donāt think Iāve had a more mercurial putter round in my life though as it was either three putt or a one putt every single hole (with the exception of a 4 putt, donāt ask). My opponent was the opposite, horrible driving round, but an absolute Houdini in getting out of trouble and sank everything within 6 feet (his home course), so an ill-time bogey streak left me on the wrong side of a 3&2 match.
There is also a best ball component though. My partner was on fire for most of the holes and I provided just enough ham (or egg depending on your preference) to cover his poor ones, so that one was never in doubt. 4 points for the good guys in the end.
One of the offices at a company I used to work for had an informal ā9 before 9ā league. No real structure - lots of side wagers, though! - just an opportunity to get a quick 9 in before the day started.
Struggling a bit since then with expectations. Working on getting my head right and remembering that Iām still gonna make plenty of bogeys, even if it all went right one round. Shot 78 (+10) the first time out. Been a little better the last 2 rounds but let good rounds slip away at the end with poorly timed bogeys.
Yesterday got in 18 with some buddies, and had another 2 birdie round! Iāve already got 5 on the year with the playing season barely a month old here.
Iām most excited that my winter putting practice is translating to the course. I grinded hard on the saw grip because I needed a change, and I dropped some huge putts yesterday. On the other end, need to improve my wedge approaches, that 80-125 yardage used to be my bread and butter and itās definitely fallen off. Havenāt had much range time so Iām hoping that will let me dial it in a little more
I played in a district mid-am qualifier today. Mid length course - about 6600 yds - with 20 mph sustained winds gusting to about 40. I shot 74 which was about the worst it could have been. I averaged about 310 off the tee which really helped me in hitting 15 greens including the last 13. Unfortunately, my putting is absolutely atrocious and I three putted 5 greens. I missed qualifying by one shot which really surprised me given how hard the wind was blowing.
The good news is that all the work I put in on my ball striking over the winter seems to have worked. I never hit it like this early in the season and I havenāt had a off the tee and approach round like this in a tournament in a long time. But, my speed control on my putting was so bad that it was comical. The greens were way slower than I am used to but, still, this was unacceptable. I guess I know what I need to practice.
That is plus handicap ball striking with high double digit putting the performanceā¦ sorry for stating the obviousā¦ not trying to rub it in
Good news is that the putting was likely
-
about as bad as you can putt (worse part of your distribution
-
one of the easiest skills to sharpen up
Did you punch strokes gained putting numbers into decade? Interested to see how bad it was given the fact that you clearly made some birdies
My putting is not great but rarely that bad. I was thrown by the slow speeds and, on a couple, the wind which definitely impacted speed and line. Iām not too worried about the putting being ok. If I can keep hitting it off the tee like today, there are a lot of low scores coming.
I think the short game number is misleading. I had one horrible pitch shot but the rest of my short game was pretty good. One of the issues with strokes gained is that there is no context. I had a bunker shot that was probably a 1 in 25 up and down - long bunker shot over a steep face uphill and into the wind and getting it to 10 feet was pretty amazing. But, the app registers that as a barely gaining shot when it was way more than that.
Yes. Ceiling is so high striking the ball at that level
Jealousā¦ time to get to work on my impact bag
