Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, UT. Johnny Miller design…jerk…I put my drive and my drop both in the water today.
I shot an 84 yesterday, which is pretty good for me on this particular course. I had a great ball striking day, but had 5 3 putts!
Have only had 2 rounds and neither were very good. 94 and then 91. Both days were cold and very windy. I do feel good about my back 9 in the last round as I shot 41 and finished with 3 pars.
The wind was incredible. I was using the 18Birdies premium app which gives a “playing as” yardage factoring in elevation, wind, etc and it showed several doglegs playing much much longer due to the wind and I think it was spot on. A few of the doglegs need 210-230 from the white tees to get a look at the green and into the wind the app said they were playing like 250-270…which was apparently true since only my best drives got me look lol.
Got my first two rounds of the year in this past weekend. I try not to get too excited, or upset about how I play out of the gate. But I was very pleased.
I shot one under the first round and even par on the second round with 15 GIR and 14 GIR. The greens were slow and bumpy so I really couldn’t make a putt but it felt great.
What I was most encouraged by was my longer driver. It hit it really well, and pretty much used it on every hole. The distance advantage definitely made a difference and I’ll be interested to see how my dispersion on the course is on days when I struggle with the driver.
Also, I tested out the MGI Zip Navigator both rounds and loved it. It was great to be playing golf again!
played a quick 12 holes today and had fun… the golf was OK.
It’s VERY nice to be playing golf again… i spent the last 10ish days with my girls at home on “spring break”… so I hadn’t gotten much golf in…
Finished another April practice round today. I sprinkled in a few pars, but went off the rails with four doubles and two triples. Oh, well.
I did start to lock in on set up and swing today. Narrow stance is a smidge open with toes on both feet pointed towards target. Shoulders are more or less square; tee ball off left instep, irons off left breast.
The setup limits my backswing somewhat but allows me sense of opening my body to target on follow through. With irons, and probably driver, hands don’t get above my shoulders. That’s okay - I’m finding I can control swing path and acceleration from that position. My swing; it is what it is…
Got out for 9 this morning in the cold and wet April conditions in Utah today. Was wonderful to be alone and one of the few on the course.
Scored well for me (4 over)…but just being out for the second time in 4 days felt really good.
I’ve found the exact same thing for my swing; a number of low handicappers have suggested higher hands and more turn, but all that does is hamper any ability I have to make solid, consistent contact.
I played 18 today on my home, 9 hole course. The first time around I shot 32 (-2), hitting 6 GIR. The 2nd nine I shot 39 (+5), only hitting 3 GIR. I generally struggle early in the season to go low. Hopefully next time out I’ll finish stronger.
Snuck out for a quick 9 during my lunch. Pretty much parked and walked right up to the tee and it showed the first few holes. Good reminder for rounds I care more about to get a nice warmup in, the intention for this one was just to get back on my home course and become friends with my driver again.
Ended up going +4, it was a nice follow up to my low round to kick off the year. And by the end of the round The driver and I were a little more comfortable with each other again
I’ve played 2 times plus 14 holes…it’s been horrific. My swing has gone completely and i can’t work out why. Shanking the ball alot with anything above a 5i, pulling the ball left, slicing it and even some massive tops!
It’s very disheartening and i’m a mess over the ball now and to top things off i got hit by a ball on Sunday when the person teeing off didn’t shout fore…luckily it only hit my hip. Driving range tomorrow to try and get some confidence back and then 18 booked in for Saturday morning.
The Early Season Blues, yeah, I can sympathize with that feeling. Sorry to hear you got dinged on the hip. Good luck Saturday.
Had my 10th round of the month today and hit lots of great shots. Shot 84(par 70). The 9th is a very wide green with a steep tier dividing the 2 halves. Pin down on the left and my second shot finished just short on the right. Chipped and it landed at the top of the tier. Thought I had hit it too far but it rolled down the tier and into the hole at the perfect speed. Birdie. Had 6 pars and butchered 2 others by missing short putts. 10 rounds 871 shots, 324 putts, 54 pars, 4 birdies and 3 chip in’s.
Interesting round today… Opened with 2 good pars (easy 2 putt with a wedge over a tree on 1, up and down, with a decent long putt on 2)… My short game is where I want it to be at this point in the season. I’m very happy with that.
3rd hold, I notice my grip is off… I had just gotten a shaft re-tipped with a Callaway tip, and it came loose… It’s my favorite shaft and I had been getting along with the combo all week, so I was excited to play with it…
Had to finish the 9 with my 12 degree experiment… it wasn’t much fun and my mental game fell apart.
I’m happy with myself for pulling together my mental game on short game shots… I hit a number of solid putts with good tempo, and when I had chips, I executed them very well…
I was completely unfocused on the rest of the course… just could not concentrate… Didn’t like hitting the “Wrong” driver and couldn’t get myself into the round… decided to stop at 9 as I wasn’t focusing mentally.
It’s a rainy day, and the first day of the Masters, so I’m not super upset… but I’ve definitely identified MENTAL FOCUS as a growth area for me game.
Came out 5th in a Senior Tour event in Middle Louisiana. Got some good points for my flight which will help in the year end rankings. Shot 78 and frankly was a little disappointed with my score. Hit 13 of 14 Fairways with my new driver. The only bad one went OB and cost me 3rd place. I did however gain 20 yards carry with my new C721 Driver from Tour Edge compared to my EXS Driver I was previously hitting. It was so wet from rain that most balls were either plugged or 2 feet from where they hit so I got a real accurate carry distance from that, along with using my V3 from Shot Scope.
Hit 6 GIR, one Double Bogey, a few bogeys and one birdie.
Jon mentions in his articles and Scott Faucett often says you have to access your rounds correctly to find out what you need to work on. I was so bummed by the drive going OB that my mind could only think about that mistake. Turns out when I accessed my round most of my strokes lost were with my wedge game. I was driving the ball so well that if my wedges were better I could have won or tied for first, no problem.
Then, I got an attitude check early this morning. I watch a video that ESPN did some years ago about a guy who lived in the slums of Mumbai, India. He caddied at a golf club next to the slum he lived in. He and others in the slum would play golf through the streets with plastic balls and their club was a piece of concrete rebar bent at the end to make a club face. The cup was a depression dug into the ground. OB was if you hit it in the garbage! After watching this it was like, “Todd, shut up and get in the cart! You played at a beautiful course, your clubs cost more than this guy makes in two years and you have food on your table.” I am blessed and fortunate and now very thankful!
I played a four man scramble on Saturday with my three best friends I’ve known since first grade. One of them is deploying for 8 months in a couple weeks, so we wanted to all get together. We had a ton of fun. Took down a small town scramble. Felt only slightly guilty about it.
I haven’t hit my driver as bad as I did that day in years, though, so that’ll be fun to figure out this week before league play starts. Wedges and putter were dialed, though. Good and bad. Per usual.
82 - 10 over with 2 doubles and 3 birdies… 30 putts.
This is my first recorded full round since the beginning of August…
Lots to be happy about, lots to work on. Still don’t have my driver, so I was gaming my backup… it did fine, but I will be happy to get back into the Mavrik.
My 12 degree driver actually set me up for one of my 3 birdies… nice little 100 yard pitching wedge follow up to a 250 yard drive down the middle… made the putt.
Played the par 5s over par, which isn’t acceptable… birdied the one I hate the most, and made a mess of the other 3 (two bogeys and a par)
I hit 1 decent iron shot on the front 9. Finally got things back together on the back, and just kept grinding.
I’m REALLY excited about this season of golf… looking forward to going low.
Played as an alternate for my club in a team vs. team comp today. Shot 80 which is my best “competitive” round this year and won my match. Could have been a better number, but couldn’t figure out the greens (35 putts), didn’t sink anything longer than 5’.
Spring greens are brutal. Our course was hairy and aerated for league start this last Thursday. It was very trying. I hit an absolutely perfect putt from about 15 feet. Hit an aeration hole a couple inches short of the hole and stopped dead in its tracks. No complaints about a 31, but still frustrating being Mutumbo’d by a sandy hole.
