Write about your Round

I played in a two-day four-ball event with a friend this weekend. Best ams in the area were playing. I’m a 3.3 index and my partner is a scratch.

Saturday we were awful. I shot 83 on my own ball and we shot 75 as a team. It had to be so soul crushing for my partner to watch me miss green after green. I only hit 4 greens in regulation. We weren’t DFL, but close.

Sunday we were the 2nd group off. On 1 I hit a 3 wood, then 6 iron to 4 feet and opened with a birdie! My partner birdied #2. My partner played great on Sunday, shooting a 71 (-1) on his own ball. I added in another birdie and parred one of the only holes he didn’t par, shooting 77 on my ball for a team score of 68. We left a few out there, but were happy to get to -1 for the weekend and we got 2nd in our flight, so came away with some pro shop cred.

I learned a lot. I’m at my best when I’m swinging with a little control. I also learned that the B player’s job is to make a ton of pars and don’t stress out the A player.

My partner is such a good player and an even better guy. Truly grateful he was willing to play this event with me.

I’m going to get a little granular… shot a mediocre 84 with 3 birdies and 3 doubles… it wasn’t anything to write home about and 2 of the double involved OB… back 9 I birdied both par 5s with short chips that both had a shot of going in for eagle.

On the granular side… I’m just struggling with the first three holes of my course.

  1. Short par 4 dogleg left… I used to bomb driver and hope to be out of the shadow of a big tree that guards the left side of the green… It wasn’t the smart play… I’ve taken to hitting hybrid, but it brings the bunked in the fairway into play… It might be time to go up to three wood and just carry the bunker. This would give me a more specific target to aim at, but if I lose it left, I’ll still have a large tree. Today I put my hybrid in the bunker, left the shot short, chipped on and 2 putted

  2. 160-180 par 3… I just need to get my distance down together here… There is a big bunker short and right, but it shouldn’t be an issue with good targeting.

  3. Medium length par 5. It’s reachable in 2, but I can’t seem to hit the fairway. I’m not sure if I need to back off to a 3 wood and just play for a short wedge shot… It seems silly to not hit driver here, but I keep messing up with driver… Today, I lost it left, duffed a recovery shot and then hit the correct recovery shot and made bogey from there… (on the green and 2 putts from 100 yards). I’m not sure what to do here.

Played modified Chapman in league last night, real interesting format. You tee off, then hit your partners 2nd shot, and then scramble in after that. We typically do it once a year, I’ve never had success because the first season I was struggling the next my partner was. Last night we both played solid, and it was a ton of fun!

I’m really pleased with my iron game right now since getting the new sticks. My partner is older and a little short off the tee, so I had a bunch of longer approaches. Stuck a 5 iron to 5 feet and we made the birdie. Ended up shooting even par, we both missed very makeable birdie putts on our last 2 holes to get real low.

Overall I feel like I’m in a good spot with most of my game for my level, I just need to get more consistent with the driver. The shaft change was definitely beneficial, but I have some scar tissue of the slice I need to get over because with the regular flex I’m more likely to hit a draw or pull.

That sounds like a fun format! Thanks for sharing. What brand are your new irons?

It’s a nice change up from best ball for sure! Once a year is the perfect amount for it.

The new irons are Taylormade P790s, but the biggest change was getting in the right shaft. Huge difference

Slayed another dragon today, eagling the 12th at my club for the first time (or at least the first time from the tips). Yes, it’s a Par 5 that is only 450ish yards, but both the drive and second have to be really good just to stay in play (not to mention have a chance for the big bird). Checked both of the first boxes and then drained a 25 footer.

Only Par 5 left at the course I haven’t eagled is a 560 yarder, so I’ll either need to play a late afternoon round where I can actually roll out a drive over 300 or dunk in my 3rd. One can dream though.

You haven’t said what your miss with the driver is. As for the first what about hitting a club that doesn’t reach the bunker?

Well, @ScottFawcettDECADE would tell you to send it on 1 and 3. You’re probably not that much more accurate with your 3 wood anyway.

I send it on three! Without hesitation… it’s just a weird shot and my game is still coming back after an injury… once I get back to comfortable on this hole it will probably be my best hole vs par on the course… I just keep making dumb errors.

On hole one:

Driver just doesn’t seem to be the play. Left and long leaves you behind a big tree, right and long is in the rough and it slants right so a ball can take an easy hop into a hazard… three wood leaves all that drama in play and if I miss it the bunker is in play…

Hybrid leaves me with wedge in hand, and enough room that the tree can’t be a problem… this shot is more a commitment issue and a first hole issue. Two things I need to work on.

I’m fairly confident in hybrid here… but willing to listen.

That hole looks like it was designed for a 10 - 15yd draw aimed at elbow of dogleg.
Can ya ‘pull’ (pun intended) that shot off 75%?
As a fader/slicer I’d hafta take [driver] it up left edge. Good tee shot leaving me 145ish in.

This hole looks made for me. Swing a draw over that trap and keep it running. Eagle time.

I’ve never seen anyone drive it, but I’ve been close… there is a huge tree by the green. I’ll snag a picture if I remember tomorrow… there is definitely a potential for a short chip for an eagle with the right drive… just brings too much trouble into play, i think… anything left of the fairway is blocked, unless you get all the way past the tree.

It’s an interesting hole and I’m not convinced I have a good strategy on it… there are two holes that I’d love to have a club that goes 260 and then stops… hopefully the two wood revolution is upon us soon!

I can dream. Right now I’d do anything to hit the club face.

Have you tried turning it off and then back on again?

Well I hit it better tonight. Score wasn’t great, but I did hit it better. 38 with two OB. Foot slipped on one tee shot and I hit it about 335 into a guy’s fountain in his backyard. Other one was just a bad toe strike. Recovered OK for bogeys on both. Made one other bogey from a fairway bunker after talking myself out of driver off the tee. 3 wood got hung up in the wind. Ho hum two putt birdie on a par 5.
I did almost ace a par 3. Guys I played with said it lipped out. I didn’t think it was that close. I also lipped out the birdie putt so whatever.
I feel better. I’m not as far off as I’ve been, but I need a second set of eyes on my swing, so I’m going in for a tune up next Wednesday.

made bogey from here and I’m not happy about it… sent driver… the tree was in my way… I need to figure out how to consistently get to 120 yards and hit that shot.
