Which Pinehurst Course To Play?

We are planning a trip to Pinehurst, N.C. in August. This is our first time playing there. Can anyone give us suggestions as to which course to play? We only have one day where my sister, brother, spouse and I will play. We are all mid-handicap players, although my sister is a bit inconsistent.

Suggestions, please. Thank you!

Haven’t been but it’s way up there on my bucket list so following closely!

Also, the No Laying Up guys spent a few days there during their Carolinas Tourist Sauce season, check those out on YouTube to get a feel too!

Are you staying at the resort? If so, #2 and #4 are the “best” courses, and also the most costly. For less advanced players, #1 is a nice test, with some of the original Donald Ross design features still intact. #3 is also very solid, pretty short but good challenges around the greens. #5 is probably my least favorite, but its still a good solid course. Both #3 and #5 retain holes and design features from the original course #3.
If you’re in town but not at Pinehurst Resort, my favorites is MidPines (a really good Donald Ross design).

I will be driving over from raleigh this sunday if I can secure a walk on time on #2 or #4

If I can’t get on those two, would you play midpines over the other resort courses?

Simply put, yes. Or Pine Needles. Both are great. PN is a bit longer, and runs through very widely spaced housing, while MP is on a contiguous piece of property, so there are places where you can see 4 fairways through the pine trees. I like Mid Pines better, plus it has the best terrace in all of the Sandhills to have a post-round beverage and watch other golfers struggle on the final hole.

Great stuff. I wish I had a few days available to go play duke club, unc club and all these great courses in pinehurst and tobacco road

Maybe one day! Just time for one round on this go around

If you have the $ you can do the resort, but even if you do have $ the resort is not a must. Plenty of other good golf there.

Played mid pines a month or two ago and it’s a ton of fun. Pine needles is great (played there years ago).

Tobacco road get’s all the love, but if you’re a Strantz lover then go to Tot Hill Farm. It’s cheaper and easier to get on than Tobacco Road and is just wacky (if you’re into that kind of golf)

Just enjoy your one round, have a quick beverage while you watch a group or two finish up behind you, and then start planning to come back when you can spend more time. Pinehurst/Southern Pines is one of my favorite places.

Darn looks like they changed the policy… 2 and 4 are for resort guests only

Misread the website

It wouldn’t hurt to make a call when your time gets close. When the weather gets hotter, demand from resort guests decreases. On the other hand, you can book a tee time at Mid Pines right now, online, but there aren’t a lot of spots open. Good luck!

Ok turns out the wedding accommodations were also ridiculously expensive which made the following a no brainer:

I am going to duck out early and catch the last shuttle to pinehurst on saturday night

920 am on #2 is booked

wish they’d put some $ into the lodge, but at least it’s spent on the course

Tobacco Road - if you can only play it once see about getting a caddie so they can help you know where to hit it.

doing my due diligence on google earth, planning on playing the blues (6,961 yards)

I think #1 and #7 are less than driver because of the fairway pinching in around 210 / 220 but otherwise I am sending driver on the rest of the front nine…looking at the back nine and I don’t see a good reason not to send driver

almost every fairway is about 40 yards wide with 15 yards of waste on either side… this seems like a no brainer to hit driver all day if there is no pinching hazard?

Any thoughts?

I will be going straight from the wedding to Pinehurst in my tuxedo…

Look good, feel good, play good

Make sure you cover the corner on #7, better to be long and straight, than too short and straight. #1 I’d still suggest driver, a wedge will be better than a 8 iron, for instance. Hit to the middle of every green, shorter shots are more likely to get you putting. Short game stuff is REALLY challenging, putting from well out is often easier than pitching from really tight grass to the elevated greens. Above all, have a great time!

I will be having a great time… should be able to finish, eat lunch enjoy beverages and maybe even play the cradle before jumping on a shuttle back to RDU

That is what I call a GREAT day
