My SkyTrak Journey

I’ve mentioned a few times here that I ordered a SkyTrak and am in the process of finishing off a room in my garage for golf use. This topic is to chronicle my journey and note any issues or questions or suggestions I have if you decide to embark on such a project.

My garage is a 3 car garage and the 2 car portion of it is deep enough to hold two more cars, so I guess I got lucky in that sense. I’d prefer to have this setup in the basement but the ceilings aren’t tall enough. Dimensions are around 19’x13’

PVC Net

I started by building a PVC net in my garage. I used 1.5" PVC pipe, and various connectors I bought at Lowes to create this masterpiece. The net was one I’ve had for many years that my dad bought at a canvas shop because I kept hitting balls through “golf” nets (yes, ripping holes in the net after one or two swings is not a great surprise). I hung the net on the PVC with zip ties.

Optishot
After a year of hitting balls into this net, I got a great deal on an OptiShot. One great feature of the OptiShot is the ability to use foam or AlmostGolf balls instead of real ones, which made me feel a little better about hitting so close to the cars but also takes away a lot of the feel you need to have when you are hitting full swings. Of course, a natural progression to a simulator is a projector so I bought a cheap Viewsonic one. Impact screens that show an image but can also take the beating of a golf ball are expensive, and I opted to using fake balls anyway, so I modified my net and added a painter’s tarp to catch the image and the ball.

This setup worked ok, but I wanted more. So I went ahead and purchased a Flightscope Mevo for indoor/outdoor launch monitor needs. It allowed me to practice partial wedge shots in my garage and receive accurate results.

My review of the OptiShot and Mevo is here: Winter practice: simulator. You can see that I wasn’t happy with the accuracy of the Optishot so earlier this year I realized it was time to move on.

Spornia SPG-7 Net
I upgraded to this net earlier this year. It really is a nice home-use net and I like how quickly it sets up and tears down. it seems to have no problem catching drives off my 115 mph swing.

SkyTrak
I preordered my SkyTrak many months ago and it finally came recently. I am in process of learning the unit and also enclosing the section of my garage.

Enclosed Garage Part 1
I built up the new wall, door, and drywall and also cleared out the garage storage stuff. Now I need to have my free time line up with decent enough weather to get the new wall mudded, texture the ceiling, and paint the room. One thing I’ve learned, with the SkyTrak you want a paint that will allow for contrast with the golf ball. I’m leaning toward a gray.

Update coming soon…

Also have a Spornia net - discussed elsewhere but I think it’s great … quality, function and the right size for the garage!

I also have a SkyTrak but my setup does not look anywhere as clean as yours … guess I have some Winter time re-organizing to do…!

This is exactly the path I’ve been looking to head down… Just need to find the cash and make the time! Sweet post

That’s quite the collection of discs you have! I am also a big fan of disc golf.

I wondered if anyone would notice
Disc golf is really fun and I can play it in the winter in Michigan too. One real positive: throwing is the opposite rotation from golf and tends to help balance my muscle use.

Shameless plug: I am one of the owners/authors of the disc golf blog: https://dgputtheads.com and the designer/developer of the flight chart tool: https://flightcharts.dgputtheads.com

That is great! I love to disc golf. I am an absolute beginner and I just do it for fun and a good walk! Funny thing for me is that it is the same rotation as golf. I am right handed at everything in my life except for swinging a club or baseball bat. So I throw a disc the same way. I love that the courses are mostly free to play around here.

I just peeked at the blog and I kind of knew there was a lot to disc golf, but wow there REALLY IS a lot to it. I may have to spend a little time on there and check it out!

Feel free to ask any questions about disc golf. I’m no expert and I’m way better at golf but I can help track down answers

I was rather surprised today to see disc golfers on the fairway I was playing - a hilly one, was lucky I saw them before making my shot!

Disc golf on the golf course is an interesting subject. As a disc golfer I love playing those places. As a golfer I wouldn’t want the disc golfers out on my lawn…

I updated the first post with a new picture after building my wall. I’m hoping to get it all mudded and painted soon, but it is very usable as is right now.

Ok, I finally got the time to finish the drywall, paint, and floor. Pretty happy with how it turned out!

Grandpa’s persimmon woods. The driver is 48"

My achievements. The irons are still my favorite set I’ve ever owned - Nike blades.

The Tiger swing sequence is a nice reference. Underneath is my long-time gamer, the Scotty Cameron Newport 2 Stainless which was the same model Tiger used for many years.

A mirror to check swing positions is a must. I collect ballmarks for courses I’ve played. And apparently I collect training aids and golf books.

this is awesome! How are you connecting the SkyTrak to the TV?

I’ve been looking at both the Spornia or Net Return. How loud is the Spornia?

I use AirPlay from my iPad to a FireStick running AirStream. Works really well.

It isn’t too loud but it is louder than a plain net without the cloth hanging. My driver is way louder at impact. I am super happy with the net.

You should be - that is NICE!!! Really nice job; nicely organized :+1:
(… Now can I hire you to fix up my garage?)

Also have a Spornia and also really happy with it. Yeah there’s an impact noise but it seems that material on the back will save a lot of wear on the netting itself, so hopefully the thing lasts a looooong time.
