My SkyTrak Journey

I love it, congrats on the cool setup!

I totally bit the bullet and bought a Skytrak today. I think I finally bugged my wife enough by talking about it incessantly and she said, just do it if you and Carter( 10 year old son) are going to use it. So I did haha. Now I have to wait 10-12 weeks for it. Kinda like purchasing your vacation and having the excitement anticipation. But we can’t vacation right now so… here we go.

Nice! My club (which is 2 minutes up the hill from me) finally pulled the trigger on the GCQuads, but we are waiting on the install team… I’m hoping to get some reps in this winter and come out swinging in spring.

That’s really cool, my coach has the gcquad with the foresight software, it’s really awesome. Just REALLY expensive. For commercial applications it’s a great way to go.

Skytrak I saw will switch back and forth between lefty and righty in some simulation software, Like TGC. I saw some people marked the floor with masking tape to easily switch back and forth between lefty and righty. Since I’m a lefty I have to deal with this. About Golf simulator I played before and it’s overhead and there was no need to switch the unit but again $$$. I’m ok with the trade offs for the 2k price tag of the skytrak.

Yeah, our club spent 50k on the equipment… we are going to have 2 bays.

I’m still working with the board to actually monetize them, but they don’t listen to my long rambling e-mails…

I’ve suggested forming leagues, having monthly / weekly contests to drive engagement, and practice routines to make sure people are getting value from them.

Half the membership was against spending the money, even though it’s one of the few places we can actually add revenue for the club.

Some clubs around here do leagues over the winter to the tune of $400 per person great revenue for the club during dormant times! But I’m just a player not a board member haha

Looks great. What are the dimensions of your hitting mat?

Thanks. The mat is 48" x 60" which seems to be plenty of space for now. When it wears out I’ll explore other options.

Fyi … some high end mat makers sell strips … you can cut out the worn part of your existing mat and fill in with the new strip.

This is really good to know, thanks!

Ok, so I have noticed a new problem I never thought I’d have. I’m breaking brand new Pro V1s every few days. The ball cracks and, if I don’t notice soon enough, splits apart. So I’m thinking I’ll be using balls out of my shag bucket instead of eating up these expensive ones.

That’s a bummer… sounds like whatever is catching the ball is doing some damage? Maybe loosen the net a little so it has more give?

That was my thought at first too. The net itself has a lot of give, since the entire unit flexes a little with impact. The target sheet hanging in front is really catching most of it and it seems pretty soft and hangs very loose.

Here is a video I did for a recent SkyTrak marketing contest (which I didn’t win). It shows how the Spornia net takes the impact and also lets you hear the sound of the impact, which is much lower than the sound the driver makes.

Interesting… I haven’t kept a ball in play on the course long enough to break it… but I assume the bet has some negative impact… might just be the nature of indoor golf?

I’ll hopefully be on a monitor next month! Looking forward to destroying some balls.

Thanks pretty nuts! I was just thinking of posting about the durability of these Snell balls that I won here on Practical golf. I have been using one ball for about a month now and it has been fantastic. Obviously it is beat up a bit from being hit I assume a couple thousand times at this point. But right on cue I go out to the garage to take a pic for this response and it’s gone haha! Kids. But I attest to the durability of the Snell MTB-X. Maybe the speed training is just too much for the pro v? Lol
