Please keep posting about rounds so I can live vicariously through you! I’m probably still at least a month if not more till courses open up in Upstate NY
Good round this morning. Near personal best for my course (if I was playing an “official” round, but this was just practice since I was on my own) and certainly the best driving round I’ve had there.
First time out this year, played 9, Kinda soggy, temperature a balmy 38 degrees, NW wind gusting to 25…I could only last 9 by myself as my partners just sat in the clubhouse having lunch and laughing at me, BUT I managed a reasonable +3 38 with one birdie and one double. I just had to get out being couped up since January…lol. My driver work really paying off as I avg 234 off the tees in freezing cold and sloppy conditions! Just playing is😊
First round of 2021 today. Drove 2 hours south to Hamilton IL to play a short 18 hole course (6000 yard, par 72). Turns out it’s a tight course with difficult greens and lots of doglegs that should take driver out of your hands.
I hit a lot of drivers and shot 85, which is not good for me. Only hit 5 GIR, had 36 putts and was 2/13 on up and downs. The positive is, I hit driver really well. I’ve been doing Speed Sticks all winter and I did feel like I had easier power today. Now gotta figure out the rest of the game.
Most importantly, it was fun and the weather was great!
I finally got out and played my first round of 2021. My club hasn’t opened play yet, which is fine. I’d prefer them to wait so there’s no damage to the course.
I played a decent public course I live two minutes from. I hit it like garbage off the tee most of the day, which is odd for me. I’m usually a very good driver of the golf ball - always something to work on. My irons were dialed, though. I had 7 birdie putts inside 15 feet. Shaggy, shaggy greens and I could not get myself to hit a putt hard enough. I left 5 of those birdie putts on line, but a foot short. Kept telling myself, “In June that goes in.”
One of those rounds that could have been a real low one, but my woes off the tee and inability to get the ball to the hole kept me humble. A bit of a ho-hum one over 73 to start the season that I’m not at all disappointed in. I’m just absolutely thrilled golf has returned to Nebraska.
Played today and shot 15 over with 3 triples. I had 6 pars and 2 birdies with one of the birdies coming from holing a deep bunker shot. Two other holes I took 2 to get out of a bunker and also had two 3 putts. Still 15 over is a very good round for me.
Variance bit me on friday… 85 (fourteen over)
Had to hit 5 recovery shots from the trees
Best tee ball of the day was a 3 wood that got wind/downslope/hardpan assist to roll out to 275 and into a hazard
Could not convert a outside of 5 feet. Hit several nice chip/pitch shots to 4 - 8 feet and went 3 for 9 on up and downs
Was playing my local muny which has seriously fuzzy greens. Hard to convince myself to smash the putt and then trust that it will slow down and take all the break in the last foot when the grain grabs it
haven’t played many rounds this year but starting to feel better, especially with the driver. birdie birdie finish didn’t hurt!
I blocked a couple of hours around lunch yesterday and went to my course to sneak in a quick 9…alas…it was absolutely packed, so I had to turn around and sulk home. One of the downsides of the pandemic is more folks on the course… Guess I’ll try again later this week now that the weather is getting crappy in Salt Lake City again.
I played golf. It was better than not playing golf.
I think my back held up, but we will find out tomorrow…
Definitely saw some signs of life in the two areas I’ve been focused on (putting and chipping) and showed some rust in the areas I haven’t been able to do… First round of the season is done, though…
It must be nice just to walk around and hear the birds for a change…Hopefully u made a couple too! First full 27 of the year on Saturday for me! Hopefully, I don’t atrophy…LOL
Played three holes on the way home… found my swing again! 3 pars, but my putting was mediocre.
First 18 holes with my group this year yesterday. cold and windy, but i was overall pleased, 83…only 1 3putt on winter greens so thats good. This is good stuff 7 GIR, 6 on back 9, Too many recovery shots on front 9, but I was -3 on tracking saving par or bogey after I was playing to fairway recovering from trees. 10 wedges in hand from 126 to 87. 2 birdies out of 4 of those. Distances from hole wedge in hand. 1.5’, 22’. 27’, 18’, 8’, 5’, 14’, 5’, 32’, 9’= 141.5’ / 10 = 14.1’ yea i’ll live with that… First W from 87 almost holed out, lipped cup…would have been a helluva bird. Take out the high and low and I was 13.5’, so better than expected
Tied my best score ever yesterday!! Shot a 73. Missed a couple of short putts that could have made my first even par round. That swing fix that I posted about turned out to be the ticket.
Played with a good friend who doesn’t play a whole lot but is getting into the game. He shot his best score ever (96) and broke 100 for the first time ever. It was an absolute joy to see him improve and reap some rewards for his practice.
What a great day!!
Congrats! Awesome to both shoot your best and have a buddy do the same.
Watching a good friend go low might be better than going low yourself. It’s like a pitcher throwing a no-hitter, you don’t want to distract them or draw attention to it, but you also want to keep the same mood as you typically do
Today I played 18 holes, and shot 78 in VERY windy conditions, … always a 1 club wind, sometimes a 3 club wind, and gusting and changing directions. It was a little frustrating… and challenging.
I have been working hard on my game for the last month, and have picked up distance with my clubs and hitting my irons much more solid… which means I do not have a real sense of how far they go!!
But I was out there with my buddies and had fun!!
Here is what I wanted to share that might have value for others.
I have struggled with being Focused as I prepare for each shot. So I built a scorecard off something that Scott Fawcett, of DECADE mentioned in a talk I listened to yesterday.
I give myself a Checkmark, if after hitting a shot I can answer these three questions affirmatively:
Obviously, to give yourself a Checkmark after hitting the shot, these three things have to be “checked off” before you hit the shot.
As I mentioned today I shot 78 on the 78 shots, I gave myself a Checkmark on 28 shots!!! On every hole that I had 2 or more Checkmarks I parred or birdied the hole.
Scott offered a starting goal of 85% of the time you need to be able to give yourself a Checkmark. I started at 36% so I have work to do.
I am guessing, if I was more focused I might have scored lower!! LOL!!!
I will be using this Checkmark system going forward to help me, help myself to lower scores.
Had one of my better ballstriking days today but my wedges and putter failed me.
+3 75
17-18 GIR
13-14 fairways
Four 3 putts
2 birdies
Wedges failed a bit. Didn’t get up and down my one chance and a couple pitches on par 5/drive able 4’s I left myself in the 40-60 range. Proximity was overall pretty bad, but still gave myself a chance to shoot a good score. Short/intermediate putts weren’t terrible, but had more than a few lags that left me with 6-12 footers. Going to focus on the putting the next few weeks
Any thoughts on what is going wrong with your putter?
My fitting at SeeMore showed I was hitting the ball consistently, just had no tempo, thus I had no distance control… I’ve been trying to make sure I work on my tempo every time I practice.
My basic practice is to just roll three balls set in the middle of two tees, take the club back to back tee and follow through to the front tee, and try to make sure I’m hitting them a consistent distance (and thus have good tempo). It’s REALLY helped me, but more than anything it actually helps me improve my putting… I had been doing gate drills and other things, which didn’t help as much as it wasn’t addressing my main issue.
