9 one putts. That is a very impressive stat.

Today was my first round for 5 weeks because England was in a national lockdown for a month. For days and weeks I’d been thinking about this first post-lockdown round. I realised I was building up my expectations and tried desperately to find a way to focus on gratitude and just enjoying the round. I think I did ok on that despite starting triple bogey, triple bogey. Then bogey, par, blob, par, par, blob, par. So inconsistent! My new saying when things go awry is “that’s golf!”. Seems to help. Also mindfully taking in the surroundings on a sunny winter day while checking out the light aircraft that border the course.

Went out this morning and had a 2 hour frost delay, but walked in 3 hours once we got going. Claw putter is still hot, had 25 putts today, but ball striking was awful. Had 3 doubles and shot 77. I was giving 5 strokes to a guy that tied me and 9 strokes to a guy that shot 80.

Hah that’s the problem with being scratch! Giving away a lot of strokes!

75… played a shamble mga event

I think we played 13 or 14 of my tee shots. Was playing with some nice guys but all 3 over 65 yrs old and I was about 75+ yds longer w driver.

17 NGIR, 35 putts

Shows the value of keeping tee shots in play. I usually miss 3-4 greens as a consequence of being in jail off of the tee or taking penalty strokes. Honestly, kinda had my b game but getting bailed out on my 3 worst tee shots makes such a huge difference for score even though they were quite a bit behind where I typically play from

Good food for thought

I got 18 in today. Greens are frozen…landed my first approach shot about 10 feet onto the green and ended up 6 feet over the green. But then I chipped in!

I chipped in again on 8, but was really up and down on the front with 4 bogeys as well.

As the greens thawed just enough for the ball to hold the green a bit, I put together a good back 9 with 2 more birdies (and 2 bogeys) to end up +2 for the day. Made a great birdie on 18, which is one of the harder holes on my home course.

Even with 2 chip-ins, I ended with 26 putts. Maybe I should try the claw.

That is pretty sketchy flying that low over a golf course! Maybe the picture creates a deceptive view but I think I hit a lot of shots that high!

Glad you got out to play again. We got about a foot of snow ( 0.3 meters) a couple of days ago and lost power for about 18 hours, kind of miserable and impossible to golf outdoors.

Yeah. The 3rd, par 3, 160 or so off the tips - there is a light airstrip in the field behind the tee box but the runway extends into the course. You could definitely hit an aircraft on approach if you tried.

Since setting my goal to break 90 a little over a month ago my last 3 full rounds were 88, 89, 90!

Way to go, that’s awesome!

Sounds like a fun game… well, fun until you actually do it… then it’s a less fun game.

A lovely warm 29 degs here today with a sou easterly wind my least favorite wind direction. Makes the 4th a 161 par3 with a lake short and bunkers left and right hard to hit with longer clubs equaling bigger hooks and blows my drawing ball closer to the left side OB on 7. Played 2 balls side by side and had 10 pars and 3 birdies hitting 10 Gir. I shot 83 and 84 playing off 15 (par 70) Holed some good putts and drove the ball well with only one slice and 3hooks(1OB). Saw a koala walking between trees. Was in 1 fairway bunker and 6 greenside bunkers. 2 up and downs from the sand and one needed 2 shots to get out.

Wow what a fantastic 9 holes winter golf this afternoon. Couldn’t get a tee time before 14.00 - would be easier getting front seat tickets to a Rolling Stones gig than a morning booking post lockdown!

First up; birdie on the 3rd, par 3. Check out the photo. About 3-4” from a hole in one! You can see the pitch mark about 1-2’ above the pin. Must have spun back. I had a spring in my step after that hole!

Was driving it well. Short game was good. Putting good. Smashed my mate

My secret - had the Tour Tempo 27/9 track stuck in my head! £24 well spent

Played on Wednesday… for the last three months I have been playing with a group of great guys on the middle Wednesday of each month.

I decided this Fall to do an experiment. I will play from the senior tees, until I can shot par or below on a regular basis… of course since I am 73 years young…I earned it. LOL!! My scores on these Wednesdays have been 79-78-77 on a par 72 course. So my scores are going down!! BTW, I have had some health issues over the last couple of years, … before that I have shot my age or less 3 times when I was 70. So I am enjoying golf again.

Wednesday’s round started out with a nice drive in the middle of fairway, 75 yards left to the pin, and I flew the green with my wedge!!! And it ended in the water behind the green. Ended up with a double bogey, not the way to start the round.

I have been working on my ball-striking and mental game, and am hitting the ball further, … just have not factored the changes into my play. I was three over par for the remainder of the round… and one of those was caused, by you guessed it… flying another green with a wedge from about 85 yards!!

So I will be working on my distances with my wedges during the next month so when I play that course again … I will not throw away 3 shots. I hit 14 GIR, but could not make a putt on the recently over-seeded and slow greens. Looking forward to playing in January.

Out here in Illinois for work. The courses are closed for the season but I have noticed while practicing people still out playing. So I asked and they said it’s ok to go out and play. So the last two days, I’ve played golf in the just above freezing temperatures (far cry from Vegas). It’s peaceful and a great learning environment. I feel if you can play decent when you’re uncomfortable you should be able to play well when the weather is nice. Nonetheless, there is something to be said about being out on a golf course when you’re one of maybe four other people, so very tranquil and a great time to work on things. Greens are furry and slow but the rest of the game still pertains. I didn’t really keep score because I played three balls from different distances (one tee to green ball). Hit a lot of shots today and got to work on a lot of things I’ve been missing. A big one is the feel of flattening or bowing my lead wrist, something I have been missing. Got to work on that feel all day and man what a difference it is at impact, I’m not fighting to close the club face or manipulating my hands at impact, it just happens. Out again tomorrow!

Played my normal early morning round today. Pretty normal score-wise, but on the 11th I had an ace lip out. They are reseeding the tee box and it was only playing 120 yards + downhill, so just a punch A wedge. Ground crew was watering the green when I got to the tee, so he just stood on the fringe and waved me to hit. Caught it low on the face and flighted much lower than I intended, but right at the hole, turned 90 degrees on the lip and finished 2’ away.

18 holes this morning with my street ‘society’. Super wet and muddy UK winter conditions at a muni course I don’t normally play.

New TM P770 irons were playing hot! Driver was hot! 30 putts. Wedges scorchio! Starting to get into the Tour Tempo tones.

Beat my buddies. Played better than my handicap. Really pleased with that in the conditions.

Shot of the day- My playing partner and I are both greenside on a par 3 for 2. He chips in to save par. I say “I just need to chip in to draw this. Ha ha”. And I chipped in! Roars all round!

played a stinker of a round on Tuesday

Opened with a piped tee shot that rode the wind and got out 290ish. Wind was really blowing. I am 10 yards behind the 200 plate in the fairway and I pure a smooth 5 iron. Dead on my line. I am thinking eagle look and should end up with a tap in birdie to start.

The wind most have been gusting close to 20 mph as I hit my 5iron nearly 215 yards and plugged in the bag bunker (dead over the stick). This is +25-30 yards from my stock distance. Whack at the plugged ball and roll directly under the left lip. Feet out of bunker, trying to hit another sketchy lie. Leave it in the bunker again. Get it out and two putt for double.

This put me on tilt and I honestly did not recover until the turn. Lack of focus, and just couldn’t really do anything productive! Frustrating!!

Lesson I learned though is that I think my expectation of having an eagle putt really threw me off. I probably should have tried to play the plugged lie out backwards or sideways and I at least would have had an opportunity to save par. Made a compounding mental mistake which is really frustrating.

Se la vie.
