First…always have fun! Second…you now realize it is possible to execute as you did reach a Par5 in 2 shots (not talking scoring here). Third…I would say this, and I know nothing about your game. One of the general things I learned 30 something years ago was ROUTINE. I stick to my pre-shot routine come hell or high water. It’s like a warm blanket. It helps you to cope with mental stress of hitting a bad shot, because you will hit bad shots. For the hell of it one day, my partner recorded & timed my pre-shot routine. You could set a watch by it. It’s 15.5 seconds and I will pull a trigger within 1 second everytime. If I get interrupted, I start over again. Here’s the thing, I don’t even realize what I’m doing…but it’s so ingrained…it does help to “clear the mechanism” if you know that term???
From 30 -50 its my PW (44 degree) fairly consistent, will be on the green usually comfortable 2 putt at worst. Inside 30 its by SW (54 degree) same outcome as PW , If I NEED to flop it its 58 and either feast or famine.
I love to chip with my 9i. Upright stance, toe down, putting style swing and getting really consistent, chip a few in and up and down more often than not. If its possible to putt I will, if not its 9i all the way, just pick the landing point and let it roll.
I love to chip with my 8i whenever possible…love the bump and run.
Had to tee off this morning at 0737 in a shotgun start. It was my only way to get on as a stroke tournament was being held in the afternoon. Had to play in the comp as it is compulsory before 1000. Had 7 pars and a birdie with only 2 doubles. 9 one putts and no 3 putts for 44 points. 81 off the stick. Had some luck too. On my 1st a par 3 I was under a tree up a bank. Just bashed it out with my putter and it rolled out to 1 ft. Another hole I was down in the trees on the left. Drew a low running 3i that hit the pin. Hit loads of really good chips. Only 2 bad iron shots( a top, and a low hooky 3i into a bunker) and 2 bad pitches(fat)Otherwise a near perfect round. I chip with my sand iron varying how far forward I put my hands. I can hit low bump and runs and higher chips based on where I put my hands.
Because I play in the comp so infrequently my handicap was 19.1. That round knocked 4.8 strokes off my handicap and now I am playing off 14.3
Come over to Princes Risborough, even at weekends, course is pretty quiet!
So, not going to do the whole round but just wanted to share something.
Played on Thursday and was not Driving well (for me) quire a few very high as I managed to swing under the ball with a negative attack angle. So Sunday, which was -1 when we teed off, I moved the ball further forwards in my stance to try and ensure an upward strike. I drive around 215 yards as I have no mobility and swing slow. My longest ever is 298 (thank you summer baled ground) and longest this year in 275. I hit 39& fairways, though the misses are usually not horrible.
So, in the cold, with no warm up I wasn’t expecting much.
Hole 1 204 yards fairway
Hole 2 228 yards fairway
Hole 5 192 yards fairway
Hole 6 195 yards missed left but playable
Hole 7 170- yards (uphill, quite steep) fairway
Hole 9 195 yards (uphill) fairway
Hole 10 207 yards fairway
Hole 11 198 yard fairway
Hole 14 165 yards missed right (90 degree bounce off the side of the fairway, bit of a slice)
Hole 15 215 yards fairway
Hole 16 150 yards missed right (caught top of a tree I was trying to carry over)
This was the most consistent I have driven the ball ever and allowed me to shoot 12 over par (HCI 20). IS it just the simple act of moving the ball forwards a few inches? I hope so cos next years going to be great if I can drive like this in the summer!!!
Hate to jinx it…and love hard fairways in November here in Salt Lake City, UT, but my first drive of the day yesterday was 294 and dead straight on a par 5 at a local course called River Oaks. Love the visual of hammering the nail to correct my path from @Adamyounggolf made a huge difference on my scoring. Best drive of my life…too bad it’s getting too cold to play and snow will likely be here in the next week or so.
This week at work has been tough, especially with perfect weather, so I decided to sneak out and get a quick round before heading to the office this morning. I played the blue tees 6450 yds with 5 clubs. 3 wood, 6 iron, 9 iron, 54* wedge and putter. I bogeyed the first hole in the dark, and still couldn’t see the pin as I hit my approach to #2 because of the fog. I made a couple birdies and was -1 thru 12 and on the 13th fairway waiting for the maintenance staff to clear the green when I got a call from my boss for an emergency conference call, so I quickly jogged off the course to my car and headed into the office
Well 2 weeks since 69. Plus had minor surgery this week, but the weather was decent and winter golf tees are up so only playing like 5700 yds now. All my work is paying off. Shot 35 front this week birdied 9th instead of double. Birdied 3&4 also to go with 3 bogeys but those bogeys were very short putts that could have easily gone in. Back 9–2 birdies, 5 bogeys. 38 for a smooth 73…. I’m starting to believe in my game and swing again. I hit 5 wedges of varying degrees from 80 to 130 within 3-4 ft. I think I talked one of the young bucks that I played with to joining the site. So now I’ll have someone to vouch for me. On 10th hole he goes you’re pretty effin deadly with those clubs. It’s so hard to do that off of this hard ground. Lotta fun today!
It is very nice when that feeling happens. Rewards earned through hard work are fantastic. Kudos!
Only hit 4 gir today but made 6 pars and 2 birdies. Had 11 one putts. Hit 7 chips to less than 2ft and holed some decent long putts. My tee to green game was pretty crap but around the green I was deadly. Unfortunately hit 2 balls ob for 84(14 over) First ob I hit the ground with my 3i off the tee. The club dug in causing the face to close and a snap hook. The second I was expecting a straight or draw shot but somehow sliced my 3i ob after aiming down the right side. Still played to my handicap with 37 points. Beautiful weather and great company and a lot to be grateful for.
Trying to recall past round, since it was almost two months ago before we holidayed in LV…
Cool, soft, breezy conditions. No birdies, no 3-putts, nothing worse than bogey, so score was ~ 80-81. I was a good way to end the season. My game has stabilized a bit after several game changes:
-
New driver and new swing shape. Have gone exclusively to power fade. Satisfied with progress
-
Iron striking is improving. Settling in on pressure shift keys and ball position. Still a work in progress.
-
Made a couple changes and chipping/pitching is much more consistent, i.e., I’m much better hitting my envisioned landing spot with my envisioned trajectory. So far, so good.
-
Putting is still pretty good. A new putting routine is implemented, and 3-putts remain at an acceptable level. Satisfied with results.
Offseason objectives are to maintain fitness and reinforce the changes made throughout the 2021 season. I always look forward to Spring and a new season. Hope springs eternal, no?
Hit the sim at the course for 30mins then played 18. My AOA ranged from .3 to 2.1 for 40 swings. I guess that’s a good baseline. I tried to flatten things out. No breakthroughs though. I might have to involve the pro….when I flattened it ala Kuchar, I was getting pull hooks. So definitely need more work, it might not be as easy a change/adjustment as I originally thought. Nothing spectacular today. A very poor putting session. 10 GIR, Missed 7 birdie ops within 16-10 ft And 3 putted 2x outta 3 chances from 25ft, it was a gloomy 60* and 25 mph winds. My best drive was only 241 and averaged like 230 outta the box and went 38-40 / 78 No DblBos though. No complaints, if that’s gonna be a baseline poor outing I think I’m in good shape.
A lucky lucky round. 2nd hole an uphill par 3. Fat 6i, not enough backswing on my wedge and dumped it in the front bunker. Only just got out then chipped in for a bogie. 9th 3i from 165m out. Bladed wormburner to 1ft for birdie. 10th Big high drive into the trees on the right and got a deflection back towards the fairway into the fairway bunker. So lucky.
Here’s the funny thing…. They rarely ask you how, only how many. Have you ever struck some amazing shots and u bounce off the green or strike the stick and watch it bounce far away… lol. I gues that’s y we play
I don’t have bad luck just bad shots.
39 with an OB and two lip outs
was fairly lucky with driver… didn’t have much control of it and narrowly avoided a penalty about every other hole… hit my irons and punch shots great… two pars hitting punch shots from 150
I am playing golf about once every 6 weeks… and don’t seem to be losing it… driver variance will surely come back and bite me at some point with a lot of penalty strokes
tennis game coming along nicely
The more I practice the Luckier I get! Mr. Player said that. All said you never had this???..Shots you never forget! 32 years ago I skulled a second shot from 35 yds trying to hit a flop on a par 3, I had missed the elevated green with my 5W…the wind was ripping hard L to R and was now in my face for the second. The ball somehow got tangled in the flag, hit the stick, slid down the stick, into the hole for a 2! 4 weeks ago I hit one of my best wedges all year on a down wind 138yd par3…stick in the front of the green! The ball hit the stick about a foot up on the pole…and bounced directly into the pond!. A tale of what is a bad shot! Lucky…and NOT so Lucky!
Last Friday I was driving the ball 220-230m and playing some great golf. Then on the 14th I skyed my drive about 130m. Upon inspecting the head I saw that it had dented the top of my driver and caused a 2cm crack parallel to the face. Then I lost confidence and drove badly the rest of the round. But now I have realised the crack doesn’t affect my driving and am back to hitting great drives. Today 34 points with 7 pars 7 bogies and 4 doubles. 1 three putt and a fluffed pitch but I recovered to hit the next one to 1ft. Frustratingly hacked the last two holes with doubles but still a good round and very consistent. Also had my first par for the month on the 3rd the no1 index hole. It was the only hole I hadn’t parred for the month. I have my confidence in my driver back.
I am lucky my driver is titanium and the crack is not fatal. I have ordered a new one but it will take weeks to get here.
