Ultimate Buddies Trip

I booked a trip to Bandon for a group of 12 next year (I know it is a long ways out)… but I am starting to plan it out. We will have a mix of low single digit golfers to 18-20 handicaps all playing. I want to have a nice competitive format that everyone enjoys.

What are some of your ideas or games that can be compelling for everyone? Im thinking a Ryder Cup team style with a different format for each round. That way everyone stays invested in it.

I think you should invite me. I promise to be entertaining…

I think ryder cup format is good… I think you want a mix of team and individual stuff, and reward gross and net play…

I wouldn’t want to play a scramble or shamble or alternate shot on a golf trip, but that’s up to your group…

I think you could do team score best net ball for the day, low net for day for whole group, low net for trip and then something cumulative like most gross holes under par… @Golfer_Jake_78 might have some good suggestions… he’s experienced at golf trips and not inviting me.

Ha! Sorry you haven’t been invited. It’s a very exclusive event. :joy:

We do individual quotas and count the best 4 of 5 rounds. We pay out for individual round winners and then have trophies for first and 2nd and a prize for last as well. We also usually try to fit something else fun in, like closest to the pin. Last year we had a team even at The Sandbox for our fun thing.

We don’t do scramble because all our guys want to play their own ball.

@damepet30 I’ve been putting together a buddies trip for 16 straight years. We divide into two teams and play a Ryder Cup-like format. However, the winning team gets plaid sport coats! I bought each of them at a local GoodWill. The losing team puts a jacket on each member of the winning team in a jacket ceremony after the final round. Great photos from this each year! The winners keep their jackets for the year and have been known to wear them to happy hours, holiday parties, etc.

As for the format, we play four rounds. We usually play the easiest of the courses first. And the “signature” course last. All rounds are match play. Round One is two-person teams. First six holes is a shamble, next six is Pinehurst, and final six are modified alternate shot. Rounds Three and Four (usually same day) are the same…two-person best ball (four ball). Final round is singles match play.

Only advice is to do all match play events as nassau

It gives a team something to play for if they totally blow it on the front 9

I always like to see a medal round in there. As long as everyone is carrying a handicap.
