Simple Change - Big Impact

I had a lesson this week that I think/hope is gonna produce some big results for me this year. We talked about my club face at impact, and how I was leaving it open which meant I wasn’t hitting the ball with the whole club. He had me strengthen my grip, and that small change made my whole setup move to where I always wanted it to be. It also showed me how open I had to face when addressing the ball. Being a big change it felt awkward and I only hit the ball OK with so much running through my head, but I squared up a few purer than I ever had before and I’m hurrying back to the range to chase that feeling

What are some small tweaks/changes that have led to big returns in your game?

Holding the club one knuckle stronger can have a huge impact… I have been through it myself and it felt ridiculous for nearly two months

Stay with it! Grip is an SOB as it is easy to sneak your hands back over

Good luck

After the session I put in today, it’s definitely gonna take some more time.

So easy to drift back into the Olde Ways, isn’t it?

Two items, sort of. First, feel like weight is inside each leg, running from groin to foot. It felt like I was more centered and really reduced sway off ball and getting ahead of things towards target.

The second was the feeling of initiating downswing by pushing off ball of right foot. It really helped to turn right hip through impact. When I did it right, the results were great. My problem was, if I got too “enthusiastic” with the feeling/move, I could come over the ball outside-in. When I moderate it, it’s very helpful to me.

One of the things that really helps me ingrain changes is to do everything at 25% and just get used to the feel.

Here in the UK I’ve stumbled into a fantastic opportunity to relearn a good grip and swing while we’re locked down. I’ve a new coach who won’t coach swing changes unless the student can commit to 4-6 weeks NOT playing golf.

I have a chronic problem with leaving the face open. After sorting my grip out the coaching process has mostly consisted of staged drills, building week by week. The key aspect is the concept of Contrast; swinging OLD way then swinging NEW way. This is supposed to help by recognising if you slip back to old ways. It also de-automates the old ingrained motor patterns before re-automating the new.

In the next week or so I can drop the OLD way and build up pace from 60% swings to full shots into my net. Ideally this will coincide nicely with courses reopening 29 March :sunglasses:

I’m really looking forward to my 2021 season!

I am a big fan of half swings and putting it on a tee when making a change (takes the pressure off ground strike)

Short term in golf is 3 months!

Honestly, I think the biggest challenge in golf is those few weeks after you get “comfortable” with a change… you take it to the course and hope it survives bad shots and old habits.

I think it’s almost easier to make BIG changes because you notice them so much more.
