I’m currently using the PRGR Red Eyes for the past month for my SS training. I track all of my progress in a google sheet and have the sheet convert the speed from M/S to MPH. Once you use it for awhile you start to develop a feel for the conversion. It works well with both the speed sticks and golf clubs. For half the price of the US version PRGR I am happy.
Got to mess around with my MLM RAPSODO again today. Not swinging totally free yet but still generating decent club speed. Hit driver three times and average club speed was 105. As i continue to gain confidence in my swing and free up, I know that number will increase a little bit more. I’m expecting to see 110-115 range. Can’t wait until January when my work schedule goes back to normal so I can spend much more time with my sticks.
Hey, i just wanted to highlight that there are already some good deals on launch monitors for black friday. The one that @jon is doing here at practical golf for the MLM and SC300 are as good as I’ve found and I’ve been looking for quite a while.
I saw that deal and that’s now my dilemma. I can’t decide between getting the SC300 or the MLM. I’m using the PRGR along with Super Speed training and I feel like I’m wanting more out of a launch monitor when I practice at the range. The SC300 looks like it might suit me best because I’d really like to just show up to the range with my clubs and get right into my session. However the MLM looks pretty appealing with their data and app features but I feel like the set up process for it might make me gravitate toward the SC300. What’s everyone else’s experience with this?
So I’m a bit of a nut when it comes to these things. I have an old SC200 that is on its last legs so I bought an MLM a few months back on ebay and just sold it recently for about the same amount i paid for it. Just yesterday, I just bought a SC300 from the practical-golf deal but haven’t received it yet.
As far as the MLM, here are the positives:
- accurate (at least very similar to the SC200)
- the video with flight path is magical
- I love the geo view where you can see how all your shots dispersed in a pattern is useful and cool
- the mlm is the only device in this price category that measures how left and right you are
- long battery life
- super light (i carry my bag and just kept it with me all the time)
The cons are:
- You need to use your phone. I like using a different app to record my swings so that is a negative for me
- If you have phone battery issues, this becomes a bigger deal since you can’t use the phone in the cradle with an external phone battery
- You need to position the device a bit further back than the SC200 (6-8ft)
- When you set up a session, you have to align your position and target on a google earth map which is a bit finicky.
- While the shot video is really cool, your swing is only recorded from a fixed location that, in my opinion, isn’t the greatest to see your swing and identify faults (you can find mlm video’s all over the place to see for yourself).
- It’s hard to switch between clubs. If you do random practice like i do, the beta AI club switcher is hit or miss, especially for woods, so you have to bend down and change the club each shot. The SCx00 comes with a remote control which you can keep in your back pocket
- It drives me a little nuts that you can’t export your data into a google spreadsheet. It really limits the value of collecting the data. The analysis is better than nothing but very limited in my view.
- If you do buy it, don’t try to do the manual calibration. It took a good hour of frustration to figure it out.
What I’m hoping with the SC300:
- easier to switch between clubs with a remote
- no need to use your phone all the time
- ball spin rate
- An SC200 like functionality with extra data like launch angle
What I’ll miss most about the MLM:
- The video flight path
- The recording of lateral displacement with each shot
One thing I’ll finally say about the SC200:
- cheaper (especially used)
- remote to switch between clubs
- AAA batteries (you don’t have to remember to charge it)
- the data it gives you is minimal but has been super helpful (ball speed, carry distance, clubhead speed). Just honing in your carry distance with clubs and tweaking your driver swing to see how it compares on ball speed is game changing.
I just finally pulled the trigger on the PRGR - Got the Practical Golf bundle with Insider access (and it was down to $179!) Hoping to know my basic stats, for future improvement and course management! Thanks Jon for offering this bundle!
I broke down and ordered the PRGR as well. I have been exercising regularly for the last month and it’s getting time to start the swing speed drills and work on some clubhead speed. The PG bundle seemed like to good a deal to pass up!
Having purchased the PRGR for indoor use I am disappointed with accuracy. Tried repositioning it from different distances behind the ball to different heights. I am not a big hitter these days but I do know the general distances my clubs will fly the ball. For swing speed and distance the PRGR seems to be off on speed by 10-15 mph, and distance by 30 yards plus. Is there any way to re-calibrate this or is it due to the machines mathematical calculations, and thus unable to re-calibrate. So what would be a reasonably priced LM for indoors. Also of note, hitting into impact screen and not net. Thanks
Yeah, I have one, swing speed and carry distance are really useful features and its very, very simple to use.
When using a doppler radar indoors the contrast of the golf ball is important. If your impact screen is white, then it might have difficulty picking up the ball (this goes for any radar, not just PRGR).
