Iron set recommendation

Hi fellow PG-ers out there!

since this is my 1st post here, I’d like to introduce myself:

I’m 42 years, from Germany, and I have been playing for just a year now, and am thinking about getting a set of irons, after having played over the summer with a borrowed set of Callaway Epics.

My avg. swing speed with my 7i is around 70 mp/h, the average distance is 130 yards - both measured with a Rapsodo MLM.

I have been to a qualified fitter recently, and hit these:

  • Ping G410 (with Alta CB Red soft-reg)
  • Ping G710 (with Alta Distanza)
  • Titleist T300
  • Callaway Big Bertha B21

I did very similar with both the Pings, but the G410 felt a bit softer to me. The T300 I found very hard to hit, whereas the Berthas were awesome - high, long and straight.

The Pro said I could as well stick with the Epics, as I produced similar numbers with that, but I’d kinda like my own set, and not stick with a borrowed set.

Could you help me decide on a set, or have any recommendations? Right now, I’d favor the Ping G410’s over the Berthas (they’re just a bit too much for my taste)

Thanks, and be safe y’all!

High, long, and straight… sounds like Callaway is the way to go!

Welcome to the forum! I’d definitely trust the fitter’s recommendation and your own feel beyond anything that I would tell you. Since you produced good results with the Epics, have you looked into finding a set, perhaps pre-owned, in your specs? This might be a great way to get you produce good results with and save a lot of money in the process. This might be as simple as going to whomever you are borrowing the set from and make a fair offer (even if it’s a golf course, the pro shop still might be willing to sell).

It’s not like the Pings weren’t

The only issues I have with the BB is they’re really chunky, maybe more than I’d like. Also, Pro said they’re probably good for my game now, but could become too “one-dimensional” once I get a bit better, and he’d expect me to need another set then, maybe 1 or 2 years down the road.

He said “I’d love to sell you those, but I don’t think it would be fair.” :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks Cory!

yeah, I could probably buy the Epics I have now - the only downside is that the 6 and 9-iron have different shafts (Aldila Synergy 50) than the 7 and 8 (UST Recoil 760). I was told it’s possible to re-shaft, although it would probably be costly.

Getting a pre-owned set is not easy here, as we don’t have too many platforms where I could find some. I only know of Callaway Pre-owned Europe or Golfbidder UK. Maybe ebay, but they rarely pop up there.

Looks like the main Callaway pre-owned site does ship internationally and is going to have all Epics on sale for 20% off tomorrow (11/10).

Wow, thanks for that, will check it out!

The savings might make up for the additional customs charges… :money_with_wings:

My opinion is you can never go wrong with Pings. They are great for every level of golfer and it’s a high quality product that will last you a long time. I’d get the 410s and not look back.

Good one, thanks! Maybe look ahead to the 425’s :grimacing:

If you don’t like the look of the big berthas, don’t buy them!

The ping 410s are great clubs and will work for years… if you like them and they gave good results, they are a great pick.

It’s easy to worry you aren’t making the “right “ decision but with modern stuff it’s hard to go wrong. A used set of epics will be fine if you can find them built to your specs, but if it doesn’t save you a decent amount of money, just buy the pings and have them built exactly to your specs!

Thanks all you guys!

Would it be really that much of a problem having two different shaft models like I do now?

I would want the same shaft throughout my irons. Just to get a consistent feel and consistent performance. I’m kinda mental so if I had 2 different shafts and I got different results I would start to fret about the difference in shafts causing the different results.

I use different shafts in my wedges, but I also hit a lot more partial shots with those, so having a different shaft there isn’t a problem.

It’s not ideal, but it’s not terrible… I have a completely different 5 iron (shaft and head) in my bag and it’s not a huge problem for me, but I adjust well to different clubs.

My largest concern (if it’s not bothering you currently) is that it would mean you are getting sub optimal results from one type of shaft… if it doesn’t bother you right now, I wouldn’t worry too much…

I played “the wrong” shafts for 20+ years and it was fine… it had some side effects on my game (tendency to hit high spinners ) but I learned to overcome…

Honestly, any iron set is going to have some compromises… you just have to figure out what you are willing to compromise on! If they look and feel good, you are mostly there.

I’m not advocating Ping’s for you but I’ve turned from fan to super-fan with their support. I had a G400 LST driver, which I love, and a crack appeared on the crown so I contacted PING and I was really impressed with their timely and fast support and they replaced the driver with a G410 LST (they were out of G400 heads apparently). They initially suggested to me to take it to a retailer to get it replaced quicker but I opted to just send the head in directly, and within about 5 days of them receiving my old driver head, I had a new G410 LST driver delivered to my door ready for the weekend and they took extra time to make sure I got the right replacement head and loft, as well as the right shaft. All in all, pretty incredible experience.

Welcome! I really think you should trust the fitter’s recommendation. If the final two decision is up to you, then go with what makes you the most comfortable, which sounds like the G410s!

Thanks for your input, all!

I was about to order a set of G410’s yesterday, but the shop told me Ping apparently has a problem with the delivery of the clubheads at this time, so I went with the G710’s.

@willwagner That sounds very good. I’ve heard lots of good things about Ping’s customer service! Enjoy your new driver!
