Horschel Routine

Just a few notes from watching golf…

It was interesting how Horschel spends a lot of time in his pre shot routine shaking out tension and THEN getting his hands on the club. He does this on full swing and putting and then it seemed to me that he is trying to replicate feels while getting his eyes / visualization dialed in. On more than a few occasions he will reset this entire routine if something is off.

I have no idea if he is backing off because of tension or because something is not matching a feel or his visual but he clearly has an organic process that doesn’t go to the trigger until everything feels locked in.

Just a unique routine that I enjoyed watching. I do wonder in terms of @Adamyounggolf model of loci of focus where he feels like his focus is.

Thoughts? Comments? Does anyone else care about this minutiae?

I think it just goes to show that if you’re not comfortable with what you’re trying to do and not trusting the shot, then it’s much less likely to be successful. Everyone is going to have a different process to getting there, but having a process is an important step.
No one should try to recreate what Horschel does (especially on a busy Sunday on a local muni), but find something that helps you believe in what you’re trying to do out there.

I think part of the backing off was due to fan noises and it seems like he has hypersensitive ears. I’d also like to see how he would adapt to a 30 second shot clock.

He is not the quickest player

Yes! That was brutal yesterday. Put those guys on a shot clock.

His putting stance looks very uncomfortable. That didn’t stop me from going to my practice green and trying it though!

He seemed like he took quite awhile, but I guess it worked. He also looked pretty mechanical, but again I can’t argue with success. Personally I would rather the Matt Jones style of play where if you blink you might miss it lol.

Grouping with Billy and BJ Holmes would be brutal.
