Grips the down and dirty

Something I’m surprised we haven’t talked much about yet in this forum. Would like some opinions on different grips. Why do you like them over another. Do you prefer standard, midsize, or oversized? How many of us are playing the wrong size grips? How often should you or do you switch your grips? Can cleaning them restore their feeling?

Grips: I’m currently playing golf pride
Z-grip chord. These are rather tough on the hands. Prior I was playing Winn dri-tac. They were so soft and grippy but the hot desert environment caused them to wear out quickly.

I really like the Multi-Compound grips but have been waiting on my fitting to choose new grips. Don’t want to buy new grips for only a month of use.

Would love to hear some feedback on grips and why you prefer them.

I play the MCC

Played z cord for a while but just too rough on my hands

Played Winn dri tacs a long time ago but now feel like I have no control of the club when I pick up soft grips

Mcc is best of all worlds imo

I have also messed around with two extra wraps under the right hand… still going back and forth though

I’ve been wondering about the wraps. I wonder how much width they create. I was thinking instead of replacing my grips before I get my new clubs, I would try the wraps.

I don’t have huge hands (M/L glove), but several years ago I switched to Golf pride Tour Velvet Jumbo from standard size. Still have it on my wedges as it takes my wrists out of the swing a bit, but back to mid-size on my irons and driver. Grips are not a 1 size fits all, even for similar hand size as it also matters how you hold a club.

My recommendation, if you are looking to experiment is change 1 or 2 clubs, or even a club from a spare set to try before you commit. After I switched, my dad also switched to oversize and it helped out both his swing and his arthritic hands. Not sure how I’d feel about the Bryson grips, but experimenting is good!

There’s a bunch of questions, and I’ll provide at least a few answers.
First, I’ve used lots of grips over the decades, including GP Tour Wrap (ribbed), Tour Velvet, Tour Velvet cord, New Decade, Pure DTX, and Iomic X-Evolution and Sticky. I liked the Tour Velvet’s feel, I felt like the Tour Velvet cord drops became slick much quicker than I hoped. The New Decade were pretty good. My absolute favorites are the Iomic X-Evolution, second are the Iomic Sticky. These grips are VERY tacky when new, and stay tacky due to the material they use. I’ve kept them on for more than two years, and even though you can see wear spots, they’re still tacky.
To me, there isn’t a “wrong size” for grips, its whatever works for you. I know there’s conventional wisdom, but its often inaccurate, so try different sizes, and use what works best. As was said above, try a couple of different grips, or different sizes, before making a final choice. If you know someone that can blow them on rather than using grip tape, they can be removed and reused (or sold). I like standard size with one extra wrap of tape under.
Grips CAN definitely be freshened up, either with a little mild soap and water, or a bit if vinegar and water. Or even just rubbing with a damp towel and then drying them off.

I like pure grips in midsize. I put 4 extra tape wraps on the lower hand.
I’ve also played the GP tour velvet +4, which keeps me from having to add the extra tape wraps.

I play Tour Wrap mid-sized grips. I wash them with soap and water about twice a year and chane them every other year.

I heard a theory a long time ago that your favorite music are the songs and bands that you listened to when you were 16. It might explain my ride-or-die obsession with the Gin Blossoms.

Similarly, I feel very locked in to my 16 year old golfer self. Back then I played with standard grips, a pistol grip on my putter and never used a range finder. Fast forward ahem years later and I am still playing with standard grips, a pistol on the putter and still no rangefinder.

My father-in-law plays with more mid-sized grips and a different setup on his putter and while its interesting to try out his clubs when we play a round together, the feeling of “strangeness” is too much for me, I don’t think I could ever switch because I am not comfortable over a shot with a different thickness. Sure it could change with range time and all of that but at this point, I guess I will continue to channel my inner 16 year old when I am out there.

Standard golfpride grips for Driver through to wedges then went for a medium sized putter grip to take tension out of my grip…

For those of you having used or are using wraps, how do the feel? Are they hard to put on without messing them up? Do they hold up well? Do they add a great deal of width to the grip? I mean I used to wrap my own hockey stick, so I am sure I won’t have a problem, I have just been a little hesitant.

Cord is a must for me. Favorite 3 grips are Lamkin UTx and Z5 and Golf Pride Tour Velvet Cord. I usually go Lamkin because I find them more durable than GP and, as a bonus, they cost less.

As far as wraps, it depends on the butt size of the shaft and size of the grip. If both are .600, I go 2 extra wraps along the entire length of the grip.

Midsize, because my hands are large…

Golf pride, because that’s what I’ve always played… I’ve done some of their different iterations, mcc and mcc +4 being my favorites…

I put the regular tour velvet on my wedges… I’m toying with the align for all my irons…

I played nothing but midsize Tour Velvet for 20 years. I went in for a driver fitting and had Club Champion put on a midsize MCC Align. Figured I’d try it and if I didn’t like it I’d go in to have a Tour Velvet put on.

I absolutely love the MCC Align. Not for the alignment, but the grip feels incredible. I sweat A LOT and it doesn’t slip at all. I played one round with the driver, then went in and got all my clubs switched over.

I actually used Jumbo grips one year when I couldn’t get rid of pain in my fingers. I don’t think the big grips hurt my game but I was sure glad to go back to my midsized grips when my fingers got better. I never felt comfortable with those Jumbos.

Have always played standard grips. Always been curious about midsize, but never made the jump. I thought Winns were amazing back when I was just starting, but have been playing standard rubber grips since getting back into the game. If I do a full fitting (or just decide to regrip my set), I’m going to give MCC +4 a try because that seems to be the thing to do these days.

How often do you change your grips?

It depends on the type of grip, playing conditions, and how often you clean them, but around 50 rounds. So someone plays weekly should at least be replacing them every season.

I currently play Super Stroke Cross Comfort, Standard.
Previously golf pride MCC, tour velvet & winn dri tac.
I liked them all & buy what I find a deal on.
Replace them myself about every 2 years. 40-50 rounds.

I only thing I really know about grips is; mine are rarely wiped, replaced or washed!

After reading this I Might remember to wash :sponge: mine!
