Golf Trips with a Family

I’m itching to plan a golf trip, and was curious if anyone has ever pulled one off with a family and/or spouse along the for the ride. I’d love to get to places like Pinehurst or Bandon, but would also win big husband points if I could pull off a trip that included everyone. Has anyone ever done it, or been on a trip that’s family friendly?

My wife plays golf, so almost all of our holidays include it, Pinehurst, Scotland, Ireland, Kohler. You might consider some place near the beach, or perhaps Orlando, with all of its family fun.

We went on a ton when I was growing up and I just planned one for next year with my wife and two year old (along with friends and their kids).

The key, it seems, is making sure there’s plenty to do outside the golf course. We did places like Florida/Disney, Scottsdale, and a bunch more with amusement parks, great pools, shopping, etc so those that weren’t playing golf didn’t feel like they were just waiting for us to finish.

Definitely take the trips, but play as early as you can so you still have full days with the family.

Interesting. I was having the same dilemma. My wife doesn’t golf, but says she would join me “as long as there is something for me”. So I have discussed for her what would make the trip interesting and fun. Thankfully she doesn’t mind doing things alone or in a group.

I’ve just started this search so I know Pinehurst fit the bill for her. However, I was looking for a number of price points and areas of the country that would.

Having been to Pinehurst a number of times, there’s not a ton to do outside of golf, or perhaps equestrian stuff. What do you think would interest her there? And don’t get me wrong, I love Pinehurst, I just think of it as a golf-first area.

Pinehurst is incredible, but it takes a bit of driving to find other things to do in the area. If you’re looking for great golf with plenty to see and do, I’d look into Hilton Head. My wife and I went twice before our son was born and it was great for both of us. We can’t wait to go back with our kiddo.

Sea island, Georgia has falconry… the sport of kings.

I haven’t figured out how to incorporate the family into a golf trip… I’m currently trying to incorporate golf into my next family trip, though!

Thanks for all the input! Right now I’m dreaming up a Pinehurst getaway just the 2 of us with our little guy staying with family. We’ve barely done anything as a couple since we brought him home, between family bonding time and COVID…might be able to sell that!

We had a family vacay at St. Simon’s a couple decades ago. On Christmas morning, my brother and I golfed while Mom-Dad-wives-children did an inter-coastal pontoon ride. We had a short frost delay and they froze their asses off. Fun times.

Now that we’re both retired, there may be more trips to Las Vegas to visit son/DIL/grandson. Golf not on the agenda…

She loves equestrian and never gets a chance to do it close to home. That and the Pinehurst shops and a spa day will keep her more than busy.

We love it. Probably going back in two years with all of our kiddo’s grandparents. Big guy will be four then and he will be able to enjoy it a lot more. Someday I’d love a place out there.

Hit up Traverse City, MI. The resort in town has 3 courses. Let alone the public golf is UNREAL in that area. The town offers PLENTY for the whole family as well. Great summer trip destination. Don’t necessarily need to stay in the resort either.

One of the greatest things about golf is that is does not take all day to play!! My wife doesn’t play but sometimes will join me on the course if the weathers nice.

We live in Louisiana and travel to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. There is a great bed and breakfast called Baytown Inn ( https://baytowninn.com) that is literally a block from all the great restaurants, dress shops, antiques, you name it. We never get in our car to go walk the shops and restaurants. My wife loves it. You have private parking and no kids smaller than 15 years old. Go east or west and you have beach to walk

Now to the good part. LOTS of golf courses to play. Grand Bear, Diamond Head, Great Southern, The Oaks, The Preserve… you can play till you pass out!
