Finishing the Golf Swing

I would love some tips from people who have struggled with finishing their golf swing. It’s probably my biggest Achilles heel, stopping at or just past impact.
Has anyone ever struggled with this?
How did you fix it?

Have you ever done the step through drill? Basically like a baseball swing, feet together behind the ball and then step into the swing?

It’s really helped me get through the ball…

More recently, I’ve focused on driving my hips through the ball and being in proper position at impact… from there it’s hard to not finish.

Try the Super Speed Golf Super Speed C club. It’s whole purpose is helping with the finish.

I have tried the step through drill but as soon as I’m not doing it anymore, boom right back to the short finish.

Awesome, I will check that out, I think a big part of my problem is being so new still, I feel like o have to guide or help the ball. When I don’t try and do that, I swing like a seasoned amateur. Still working in the consistency. I would say I’m better than a month ago. Getting up to the 50% range instead of the 10% range.

Interesting.

Sounds like you might be getting stuck in your regular swing…

Another trick I’ve used is to try to hit my back with the shaft.

I like that idea and concept. Definitely get stuck, I think a lot of it stems from my back. I had surgery about five years ago now, and mentally I think I’m still protecting my back, even though it hasn’t given me problems in three years.

Yes, I definitely struggle with this. I find that it comes from a lack of commitment to the shot. When I’m not committed I kinda try to steer the ball and don’t finish my swing.

The fix for me is both mental and mechanical.
Mentally I’ll tell myself that I don’t care where the ball ends up as long as I make a good finish. Mechanically I try to swing the club all the way to a good finish. I’ll step through if needed to get there.

I was taught the Tommy Fleetwood finish. Watch how he cuts off on the follow through, gives you a bigger sense of control and i find it allows for more commitment to the shot.

@ Gisclairj
I tend to ‘short shuck’ it too, ‘hands to shoulder back, hands to shoulder thru’ is ONE I must remind myself of a few times a round.

I am so appreciative for everyone’s advice. I will definitely try and think about these the next time I’m practicing in the range. It’s where I go through all of the mechanics of the swing and try an d make them stick. Getting closer but have a long way to go.

I understand that it can be an area of concern if it looks funky or weird on film and also the position at the end can be a symptom of issues earlier in the swing, but at the end of the day, whatever happens after impact doesn’t really matter. If you focus on the swing mechanics that produce good impact, what happens after will take care of itself. It might be that getting to a “correct” looking finish posture just doesn’t work for you, but if the club is getting to the ball the right way, then it doesn’t really matter, so I wouldn’t really make it an area of focus.

Keep working, but take some solace knowing Tommy Fleetwood rarely finishes a swing and he’s a world class ball-striker.

@bigislandman That does make me feel better. I guess it’s all about the realest as @CoryO said. What happens after impact is kind of irrelevant but you have to get through the impact zone, at least.

I just watch Rory win at congressional on repeat

I just spent an hour with my instructor on this a couple of weeks ago. I thought my issue was my backswing, but am now realizing it’s follow through. For me, the feel is throwing the club at the target after impact. When I get that feel, the ball flight is right where I want it. Keeping that feel is going to take some effort.

To me this goes to a simple feel like when we are taught as kids…if you focus on the practice swing to get the weight to the front foot and finish with your right toe on the ground only (Right handers) and the heel off the ground its hard not to finish the swing…

I know this is basics but its how I was taught as a kid and how my kids were taught to finish and if there is ever a problem i go back to this. If you get to a good finish like this you almost have to swing through the ball.

Another thing i work on in practice is focusing on making sure my fastest point of the swing is past the ball…a lot of people get focused on just hitting the ball and that tends to stall out a swing…swing through it, the ball just gets in the way.
