DIY putter fitting

Hi all

I’m very tempted by the new PXG Blackjack putter but I want to make sure I spec it out right. I’m not comfortable going to a fitter given the pandemic. Does anyone have any thoughts on how I can figure out the right length and lie? Or how I can measure the length and lie of my current putter?

Thanks!

You can definitely figure out what you need at home, it’s just going to take some work and a mirror!

Honestly, I’ve heard the staff at pxg is great, so they might have some advice on what information they need to build you a putter. I’d recommend reaching out to them.

I’m not sure the beat way to get lie and angle on your current putter without going to a store, though.

Second that. You don’t want to be “guesstimating” on something like that.

With the price of new putters today, I’d definitely recommend a fitting to make sure that you’re getting the best for your money. I think it will go a long way to eliminating buyer’s remorse, too.

So I called up the pxg number and they weren’t terribly helpful. I did go digging for my last fitting though and I found a SAM PuttLab report that had me 1.5* toe up at impact and I’m pretty sure that was with standard length and lie. Does anyone know that that means? I think I want an inch long based on my being 6’3” tall and Stan Utley’s book. So if I’m 1.5* toe up in a standard length and lie putter (35” and 70*) what does that mean I need in a 36” putter to have that at 0* toe up. I’m guessing around 2* flat. Anyone?

I don’t know what that means! Shocked they weren’t more helpful… maybe go with a seemore? They actually help customers…

I had a great experience over the phone with Sik. I’m 6’6” and they got me into the perfect arm lock for my size after a few measurements and some conversion about how I stand, grip, etc.

@Ty_Webb, have you actually held a Blackjack in your hands? I went to a fitting for the Blackjack having seen the pictures of it in the golf magazines and thinking it looked sweet. The clubhead was smaller than I expected. I ended up ordering the Gunboat Gen2 putter because it was much closer in size to the mallet putter I am used to (Scotty Cameron Futura X). I recommend you a least try one out before you buy. If you are concerned about a full fitting just ask that you be able to come in and try one without having the fitter present.

Did you get this done? How’d it go?

I did. It went fine but wasn’t nearly as thorough as the putter fitting I had with TrueSpec a few years ago. The fitter I had did not use technology for the fitting. Just let me hit some putts. He suggested I order the putter one degree flat because the toe was in the air when I putted. But he didn’t have the ability to adjust the putter so I could try it to confirm his prescription. The only adjustments we played with, other than switching from a Blackjack to a Gunboat when I said the Blackjack head seemed smaller than I like, was to adjust the length and to change the insert weights. He did have the three different types of shafts but I knew I wanted a double bend shaft. When it was time to choose the grip, he didn’t have all of the models so I could hold them. I ended up ordering a Super Stroke Flatso 2.0 based on saying the Super Stroke Flatso 1.0 that he had was a little too small. So, while I’m excited to receive my new putter next week, and think I will love it, I can’t really say the PXG fitting experience gave me a lot of comfort. They don’t charge for the fitting ( I think I paid $50 or $100 for the True Spec putter fitting) so I can’t say I didn’t get my money’s worth. But I expected a little more from a company that I consider on the high end of golf equipment.

I took my new PXG Gunboat Putter to the course for its inaugural round today. Unfortunately, our greens had just been deep tined and verticut this week and topdressed with sand so the putting surface was a bit challenging. I really liked the way the ball came off the putter and feel like the large white aim line on the top of the putter will really aid in aligning putts. Oh, and it looks really sweet!

Glad it went well… I’m likely pulling the trigger on an edel soon.
