DECADE Strategy

Very random question, but I know @ScottFawcettDECADE @LouStagner and others are able to dig deep in the data from Shotlink and see all shots on a hole by day, etc.

Is this data accessible by anyone? Not going to challenge Lou or Scott’s skills in that department but would be a fun rabbit hole to go down on a rainy day or during tv coverage.

Unfortunately not. The PGA Tour has to grant you access, which usually means your a coach working with a player or some kind of industry professional who needs it. But I agree, it would be fun to sift through!

That’s sad - grow the game!

Step One: Learn SQL
Step Two: Get hired by the PGA Tour
Step Three: ?
Step Four: Bifurcation.

As stated you have to have a Tour player designate you as their coach. It’s fun, but it’s also something I would suggest letting people like me, Lou, Sean Martin, Mark Broadie, and a few others do the work and you just enjoy the fruit. It’s a giant pain in the ass. As for grow the game, I know that’s a bit of a joke, but it’s because of shot by shot gambling that will be a staple soon.

Makes sense, can see impact with gambling for sure with giving out too much information and getting advantages.

I’d just like to sit and sift through some of the shot charts by hole like you’ve showed for 10 at Riviera. Really wish they’d have a 10th at Riviera feed all week like Amen Corner live at the Masters. You can sit and see it on a group by group basis but I like the screen grabs you’ve shown of the field. Would be nice to have that interactive and hover to see each player. Not sure why they wouldn’t do that.

Yeah, I’d love to have more access to data… Baseball analytics has shown that people digging into the data can bring tons of new information forward… More than anything, I need a large data set to practice SQL on.

Do they monetize the data? I am guessing it will become data as a service and sell to the sportsbooks?

Comparative advantage will be in platforms built to interact with shotlink and personal stats (ala decade). I also think there is law of diminishing returns for golfers. Most of the insights from shot link have been summarized by scott, brodie, lsw etc

I don’t need anymore stats. I need to eliminate 2 way miss and hit more greens.

Dumb question: but does the Foundations system have the targeting strategy for greens or is that Elite only?

My season is ramping up, so Im getting more in depth on the decade stuff and want to make sure I’m using everything.

The target strategy for approach shots is in month 3 under correct targets this is just the basic strategy with no trouble around the green.

The month 3 videos that you are going to watch are:

  • C correct target
  • DECA catch all

In month 4 its the following videos - these two videos talk about how hazard, bunkers, wind conditions and areas around the green can change the appropriate target in the first video.

  • A analyze again
  • A analyze conditions

Thanks! I just figured out the free access I was granted only gave me the first months worth of videos… I’ll happily pay for the subscription to get access to the later stuff.

Just not this month

It’s in the foundation membership but as stated above, it’s not unlocked until the third month or so.

I’m signed up. I had access to the first month through this site (and I think the Groove It brush purchase)… but I’m going fully active with it for the next 6 months.

I’m happy to answer any questions about my experience… for reference, I’m at a 6.8 handicap and “feel” like I should be significantly lower… I was down to a 5.4 and putting terrible last year before a back injury… I’m back online but my not comfortable with my full swing quite yet… I was waiting to get fully operational to sign up, but I want to be fully versed in DECADE strategy when I’m swinging well, so I went ahead and joined now… We will see how it goes.

My goal this season is to put consistent rounds in the 70s in on my home course… I haven’t broken 80 yet this season, but have some rounds in the high 30s on the back nine…

For courses you play frequently has it given a new way or strategy that you haven’t thought of? I feel like my home courses I kind of have a general idea of the best strategy for my game but it just comes down to eliminating my big misses.

Most of the value is in teaching you how to think and apply strategy

You “know” many aspects of decade… it systematizes and illustrates the principles in many real life examples though that will help you DO the things you probably deep down may kinda know you should be doing

I could give you a one page bullet point summary of foundations (scott gives most of the concepts away for free) and i would still tell you to pay for the content

The concepts are pretty simple… the value of the content is in the DEPTH

This is a good question. I play the same course 99% of my rounds, and overall targeting isn’t that complicated… I haven’t gotten to the full targeting strategy stuff yet.

Some of the putting drills are awesome, though!

80% of the shots will be the same or close to. But there will be a few holes that will probably have a different strategy.

It has for me - biggest differences now versus how I played my home course before:

  • I “send it” with Driver 1-2 more times a round than I did before. One because I can pick a better line off the tee (thanks to Google Maps) which allows me to hit Driver more safely and another because it gets me a shorter club in which will pay off over time.
  • on one of our longer par 4’s (450yds), my new “target” virtually removes the left greenside bunker (which I refer to as auto-bogey)because it leaves a tough longer carry over a high lip to green sloping away from you. I have not hit the green more often yet but my miss is an easy uphill chip where I can get up and down 80% of the time versus 20% from bunker (my previous common miss).

In addition to DECADE, I have also been following the shots-gained charts that Lou Stagner puts together and besides setting realistic expectations for approaches into greens and short game shots which keeps me more patient and less emotional on the course, I’m giving myself way better up and down opportunities when I miss greens.

I only started using the “system” late last spring and saw my hdcp drop from 1.9 to 0.6 over a couple months (playing 3-4 times a week) and I went about 30 straight games in the 70’s or lower. I’m in Canada so I then had the 6-month winter layoff with no travel south (thanks to Covid) and since starting up again last month, I have not shot over 77. Even when I’m having an off day ball striking or have that mid-round lapse for a few holes, I’m able to minimize the damage because my misses are in better spots. I do have the luxury of being a fairly accurate driver so my miss is usually just in the rough and not trees or water.

One unadvertised benefit of DECADE for me is that I no longer think about score - I used to be way too focused on how many over/under par I was and also would start thinking too far ahead. Now I stay in the moment and only think about the next shot. I’ve gone from knowing exactly how many over I was before anyone added up the card to having no idea what I shot. Yesterday I shot 72 and honestly didn’t know; walking off 18 I knew I had hit it well, was never in trouble but also that I never made a birdie all day (I did chip in for eagle on par 5 #1) - my buddy said I was 72 and I had to think about it before confirming. The old me (after eagling 1) would have been immediately thinking about trying to shoot 32-33 on front and ended up 38 with 2 doubles. Golf is so much easier for me now than it was before…now if I could just stop missing 1-2 three footers a round, I’d really be happy.

I tweeted this question at Scott… so let me tell you a little DECADE story from yesterday… I’m playing the hated 6th hole of my home course… Par 5 that’s unreachable in two… Tee shot is into a valley, second shot is up to the other side, green is built like the Mercedes logo where the lines are ridges… it’s a nightmare.

Hit Hybrid into the fairway, hybrid up to the 100 yard marker… wind in right to left, my target is the back middle of the green, with the pin on the right side… Thinking it through, my target is probably a little back of where it should me… hit it hard and it stays left… our bermuda is thick…

Should have just pitched onto the middle and tried to two putt… got aggressive, left it in the rough… hit the second shot without focus… had 30 feet left. 3 putts.

A really, really dumb 8.

I also: Double Bogeyed, Three Putt, Made Bogey or worse with less than 100 yards in, 2 chipped and made bogey or worse on a par 5…

5/5 on the Tiger metrics.

Chose a good target on the par 3 7th, hit a 6 iron that landed pin high and rolled out… made a 2 putt.
