Bryson DeChambeau

Bryson is the most talked about figure in golf these days and definitely controversial. I have a strong interest in his practice habits, equipment choices, swing techniques and course strategies. I’m very interested to hear anybody’s feedback good or bad about him and any shared information would be extremely appreciated.

Love him or hate him, you can’t deny that his performance Sunday was ridiculous. And his work ethic is very strong. I wish when I were younger I would have had the drive and grind to practice like him.

I agree. He is determined to get better and is doing everything he can to do so. His work ethic is beyond reproach. He has very few commitments so he can focus as much attention as needed on his golf.

People seem to forget Tiger did the same thing in the 90s, he massively bulked and had his strict regime. It was lauded!!

Bryson does a very similar thing and he’s a mad scientist.

I don’t like his methodical approach and speed of play but you cant knock him for moving the game on.

He has set a light under the feet of the rest of the tour now!!

Has anyone started swinging a little faster after watching DeChambeau?

100% this. People forget there’s always a guy that sort of flips golf on its head. Bryson will not win nearly as many tournaments or majors as Tiger has, but he’s doing stuff other guys can’t the way Tiger did. And how Arnie did. And how Jack did.
It’s the same but different.
I’m not mad at a guy who stood in front of and said, “I’m going to get strong and swing really hard.” Then went out and did it. He’s not a mad scientist for looking at easily digestible data that said strokes gained off the tee is the biggest advantage. He’s just a guy that understands data.
Could he speed his play up? God yes. He’s gotten better since everybody was giving him crap about it.
I respect what he’s done. I don’t respect the golf world’s overreaction to it. The talk about dialing tech back is asinine. As Winged Foot showed us, there’s plenty that can be done to tame these guys to an extent.

I agree. I think some of the criticism was simply because people don’t like him. What he is doing is pretty amazing. Tiger and Nick Faldo both completely changed their swings and had success but Bryson took it to another level. My mouth is watering thinking about what will happen at The Masters.

I think this is really out there at this time. I have been seeing many posts talking about how you need to have a fast backswing speed I. Order to have a fast through swing. With Bryson the shaft is actually bending on his backswing before the club even gets to hip high. Also, it’s been put out there that kids starting golf should focus on making sure they have fast swing speed.

I agree. He told us what he was going to do and he did it. He has some issues but seems to have addressed the slow play to some extent, He will not rise to the heights of Tiger or Jack but but your right in that he is having a similar type of impact. I was thrilled with him winning the US Open and am looking forward to what’s to come.

Yeah, the masters will be a great spectacle. Only thing is others will have the freedom to bomb too.

Him winning a major now though, removes some of pressure on his approach to comps, so likely it won’t phase him now.

Can’t wait!!

My biggest question on Bryson is his stats from ~100-150.

Yes he bombs it and his wedges are pretty good, but his 100-150 stats are pretty bad.

My first thought was that his feel took a hit bulking up, but then looked and his stats are the same pre/post bulk up.

I just wonder how much of an impact hitting shots from that distance with a 6/7 iron length club has. I can’t imagine trying to judge distance on a 3/4 shot from 125 with a 7 iron length club would be.

Not taking anything away from him or what he does but it did surprise me how poor he is from that range statistically.

My fitness coach described Bryson perfectly. For all too long golfers were never looked at as athletes and just guys who can go out and play their sport for 30-50 years. No other sport on the planet can you do that. Then comes Bryson who says I’m going to play this sport as an athlete and although my longevity won’t be there, I’ll play as hard as I can for the amount of time I can. Thought it was a great way to look at it. Go hard for 10 years and retire. Just like any other athlete.

If he plays well at Augusta it will be a huge story. No other venue in golf is as well known for requiring precision and strategy. If you can just bomb away and succeed everything that is known about August will be called into question.

That’s true, it seems like he is putting ultimate stress on his body and that can’t last forever. He use to miss golf tournaments from time to time because of a bad back and has said his new routine has alleviated that. His rotation on backswing and follow through is extreme with his upper body so not sure how long that can last.

That’s one thing is I believe he is already strategizing and if anything I bet that benefits him at the Masters. He was already discussing how he wanted to play the 13th hole by I believe driving it up to the 14th. He’s not going to give away all his secrets but I did here that one. I think what hurts him most at Augusta is lack of attempts playing the course. It will be a slightly different scenario this time with the tournament being played in November.

I’d have to disagree about Augusta being a precision course. While there are some holes needing placement, on the whole it is less penal than Winged Foot.

If he gets off the tee, firing into greens like 9, 10, 11 & 17th will be considerably easier…before even mentioning the par 5s

I worked as a volunteer at a pga tour event (and one pga championship) for 5 years straight.

I had many interactions with the pros and only ever found 2 pros to be consistently not nice…Bubba Watson and Dechambeau

Both consistently acted like petulant brats. When Bryson hits a bad shot, you don’t want to be standing anywhere near him

Yes, I’ve heard this and seen it. At the AT&T Bryson screamed at a Marshall and threw a small tantrum on the third hole at Pebble Beach. Also one of the marshalls told me he found Bryson’s ball in the rough for him and didn’t even get a thank you. I get why people don’t like him but what I don’t like is when they try to minimize his talent. He’s not winning any sportsmanship awards that’s for sure.

The real key is whether Bryson can become more than a one or two year wonder. That’s what separates the great players from the good, flash-in-the-pan players. With the stress he’s putting on his body, coupled with his temperament I am betting not.

He might not care about that. He might just want to make a bunch of money fast, bring some technology to the game that he is remembered for and bail. Enjoy life and play golf for fun with no pressure. Then again maybe not. Hahahaha. It’ll be interesting to see how long his body will hold up. If he takes as much pride in his body ( I’m guessing he does) as he does with all of the science he’s worked on, I’m sure he has the right guys in place to keep his body functioning at its optimal performance.
