Anyone using the GHIN app?

Anyone here using the app? Was wondering what you all thought about it? If it was working OK for everyone? Anyone tracking STATS with it?..Thanks

I’ve been using it for years. The newest version works pretty well for me, although there were some wrinkles when it rirst rolled out last January. I’ve used the statistics, but got a bit lazy. I always use the hole-by-hole posting method, that works well in adjusting for maximum hole score.

We just got it this year through our new association. Our Men’s Association became affiliated last year with Golf Assoc Philadelphia. Before that we just posted in the clubhouse. I like that you can keep your stats in the app…I only have 3 rounds in, we’ll see how it goes after 10 or so.

Were you not associated with the USGA somehow previously? All of your scores show up in your record through GHIN, so somehow they were merged. Anyway, I hope it works for you. If you need help, please ask.

Yes, we used to only be able to post thru the system in our clubhouse. This is new to us

Love using the app; have been doing so ever since it became available. The hole-by-hole stats are helpful and the automatic ESC adjustments are nice.

I’d like to see them add stats for penalty strokes and sand saves, but overall I really like it.

I’ve been using it for a couple years. It’s handy. I just put in the total score, no stats which means I have to calculate whether my blow up hole was 2 or 3 over depending on my handicap for that course. The new HC system may be more accurate but it is not easier. Actually, it’s a PITA. I keep the official index for the 1-2 tournaments I play a year. When I stop playing tournaments, I’m stopping with the official handicap. It’s not worth the overhead to me.

So USGA cap was submitted thru our system in the clubhouse. When we we became GAP members all scores from last year were transferred over per Pro. That’s y scores are in from 2020. I think I only have 2 scores in from this year. I played exactly 23 rounds last year. Hoping to get playing back up to 40 this year. With distance creeping back up and wedges starting to dial in. Hoping to take that 9 down to a 6.

From a user standpoint, what do you think is more difficult? The primary difference, in my view, is the change from the old ESC to the new maximum hole score standards, and that’s easily addressed by using hole-by-hole entry.

I’ve been using it for a couple of years as well. Initially I just put the total score in, but last year I started inputting hole by hole stats and it’s interesting to review them. I find the app pretty straightforward to use.

@davep043: My first point is that it is non-intuitive. There was probably a 2 hr discussion with one of the foursome members initially about whether you get an additional stroke for the easiest handicap hole or the hardest hole. You are correct that entering your score hole by hole obviates the need to do any ESC calculations. We have a single score keeper for our group and he keeps the card to do his own stats. Admittedly, me keeping my own card is a pretty low bar but my point is I don’t care enough about this to go thru the effort.

What’s hard about it? Every handicap range has a max net score and net adjustments are from the hardest handicap hole on down.

You can use the app to track a whole bunch of personal statistics besides scoring. Didn’t say it was hard to use friend, I was wondering if people who have used it, were using it to track those stats and if they found it to be helpful? I pay for an app to do this, but since it seems this will also do the same thing and I already pay for it through our associations fees…I will utilize this if others think it works…

I wasn’t responding to you.

This is a little adjustment we’ve had to go through in the US, pretty much everyone in the world has done some adjusting. A HUGE percentage of the world uses stableford scoring for most of their play, including competitions, and the maximum double bogey is a direct comparison with standard stableford. This is one area where we (in the old USGA Handicap system) made the change to align with the majority of golfers in the world.
@BarryGoldberg, this is where the @ or Quote functions can be really useful, to make it clear what and to whom you’re responding.

I wish max score was gross double bogey for esc…

This aligns with my philosophy that most casual golf should be stableford / match play

I think it would help pace of play

More aggressive esc would make handicaps work better for matchplay for low handicappers in my humble opinion (this would handicap the aggressive/good ball striker who incurs penalty strokes more accurately)

Stroke play events should be flighted. I really don’t care how a 18 handicap levels the field with 2 handicap for stroke play… that has always seemed like an odd proposition

This is in the bucket of “handicaps are not perfect”

No solutions… only tradeoffs
