2 wood: anyone have one they like

I think on the whole golfers need more loft with their drivers than they think. Even Dustin Johnson has had his loft set at 10-10.5 degrees when most assume that the faster you swing the less loft you need.

I played 9.5-10.5 for two decades. After my first driver fitting I was in a 9. My most recent fitting this year put me in a 7.5. I’m a super spinny player, though, so I need to lower loft to keep it in play in the wind around here. Also have a crazy low spin beast of a shaft. I still peak around 95 feet, so I get plenty of carry plus some roll out.

In general, I totally agree that most players need more loft, but it certainly depends on swing.

Yup it’s definitely specific. I’m on the opposite side of the spectrum I am really low spin (some drivers I can’t get above 1700) and launch it lower. So I need to get the ball up in the air quickly.

100% agree with this and it’s not something I’d recommend for other people.

I’m just a unique and beautiful snowflake!

I could easily pull my three wood out of my bag and it wouldn’t be missed…

This is one of those ideas that I want to try but am not confident it would be a long term item in my bag, it’s also why I want a 2 wood and not a driver… so I have another club to hit off the deck, even if it’s not the beat fit for that application.

Quite true, even more so as club speed decreases. For any other engineer-geeks check out Dave Tutelman’s site http://tutelman.com/golf/index.php
He’s got some illuminating graphs and conclusions: most people (ie not named Bryson, Rory) need all the loft/launch angle (along with a good dose of spin) they can get to keep the ball in the air as long as possible.
Full disclosure: he gets quite technical; those averse to engineery may want to skip to the exec summaries!

Hope this helps!

I’m waaaay too new to this game, I didn’t even know there was such thing as a 2wood, I mean it makes sense though.

I believe originally, drivers were just called 1 woods…

No one really makes a “real” 2 wood anymore, but there are some options on the market… the cobra long tom is the last club I’ve seen advertised as a two wood.

…or “mashie”
(…or niblick or some such…)

Nice! Would be fun to swing that fast. I’m sure you’ll get there.

We’ll see, I think it’s just a matter of being consistent with the workouts

Im chasing 300 yards of carry as it breaks a par five on my home course (with obvious benefits elsewhere)… I’m thinking 120 will get me there…

Hopefully I don’t need to change equipment!

Yeah. Good luck in your pursuit!

So I’m back to the drawing board in this… hopefully going to go hit some demos this week at golf headquarters…

My three wood is the only “old” club left in my bag… it’s a leftover thrown in to get me to 14 clubs… everything else in my bag is purpose driven for the most part…

I’m thinking the cobra big tour 3 will be my best option, but I haven’t hit a modern 3 wood in a bit…

I was trying out a TM Original One Mini, but I didn’t get the shaft right in it. Too stout for me and I can only hit low bullets…it did work well for me on some really windy days though and I do like the head. Haven’t had a chance to try something else, but Mavrik Max 3 wood has been good when the driver isn’t.

TM SLDR mini at 14 degrees. I’ve used as a primary driver at times, and as a 3 wood.

Yeah, I haven’t seen an SLDR C in the shaft that I want… I’ve got an eye out on ebay.

Went and hit some today and somehwat had a change of heart on what I’m looking for…

Ultimately, what I need out of that slot in my bag is something that doesn’t go as far as my driver, and doesn’t roll out… After 250ish yards, distance is less important than forgiveness… so if I can find a 3 wood that I can consistently hit well, I’ll be all set… hopefully going to try the SIM on the range tomorrow.
