I threw a comment at Jon on Twitter today, something that’s been on my mind for a while regarding getting kids involved in golf.
Is there an organization that collects used clubs to provide to kids interested in golf who can’t afford the equipment?
Anyone know? Jon couldn’t think off one off the bat, thought maybe someone on here might know.
Or maybe it’s time to start a non-profit since I can’t find a job!
I looked into that once and the only thing I found was that you could send stuff to 2nd Swing and they would donate to The First Tee, but it might be that they donate a % of the value.
I ended up giving stuff to a local clubfitter I knew that also coached high school golf and he was able to get it to some kids that needed equipment. I think if you have a local First Tee chapter you can donate directly, but we didn’t have that here and I couldn’t find anything else.
Thanks Kevin, I’ll keep digging
You can donate clubs and balls to the First Tee. Our local First Tee has thousands available now. When you first start classes they give you a set for around $10-15 I think (and free for those on scholarship), and then when you grow, you can trade in the set for a set that fits.
That’s great, I’ll look into it!
I think the problem with this is time and resources. Getting the clubs in the hands of kids would be fairly complicated and costly, especially if the equipment was adult size.
The best thing anyone can do IMO even if it’s only $5, is to donate to Youth On Course. In my view that’s the most efficient way to give kids access to golf courses who normally would not have that chance.
I’m almost done with all of my merchandise orders, but I’m going to try and donate a minimum of $5000 to them this year. And PG readers can help by either donating directly, or buying themselves a shirt, head cover, or caddie towel!
