The Ben Hogan Thread

Based on the golf book thread, I picked up Ben Hogan an American life. I have burned through 150 pages in the last 48 hours. Great story.

Just thought I would start this thread to drop some interesting tidbits.

Hogan finally broke through in 1940, winning three consecutive tournaments (Pinehurst, Greensboro, Asheville I believe).

In those 216 holes, he hit 214 greens. He 3 putted twice and carded 10 / 12 rounds in the 60’s. That’s playing some golf!!

All of this was preceded by Byron Nelson lending Hogan a new driver he had received from McGregor

One of the great things about Golf is the vast sharing of information. I could be wrong but I can’t think of another sport where a competitor would give another competitor something to help them beat them.

My dad is a huge Hogan fan… the first time he met mr Hogan, Hogan was naked… having just gotten out of the shower at the country club (colonial in Fort Worth, I think? )

The next time, one of my uncles mentioned that he had just bought Hogan brand irons and they hadn’t helped his game… mr Hogan politely excused himself… my dad was livid.

My dad loves to tell Hogan stories… I’ll get some from him next time I see him and post them here.

That’s great. Would love to hear some. He has an incredible origin story. As someone who has spent time in ft worth and west Texas, I’ve found the biography a great read.

Oh yeah! Very “humble” beginnings, and he was determined and really developed a work ethic that had become … literally … legendary :+1:
