Playing Through - Stud or Dud?

To your point, the only time it really makes sense to play through is at the beginning or end of the day. If you have a super early tee time hoping to get a quick round in, it does suck if the group ahead has no one ahead and is playing at a much slower pace. On the other end, at the end of the day, when I take my teenage daughter who is a beginner out to play, I’m quick to let people to play through so they can get back to the clubhouse before dark and teach her early to be courteous to other players (let them play through, leave the green immediately after your group is done, place your bag between the green and the next hole when possible, etc)

If you have a properly managed course, the middle of the day there are marshalls to make sure there isn’t a huge gap between groups and it makes no sense to rush the group ahead when they are waiting themselves. I’m mature (read old) enough to know that pressuring the group or hitting into them can get somebody hurt and just isn’t worth the emotional aggravation.

YMMV depending on the traffic at your course. Here in a metropolitan area tee sheets fill up the day they open up so there are no gaps in the middle of the day.

I rarely play through myself.

Either skip the group and hole (assumes course is pretty wide open) or just slow down and practice.

I often turn in after nine and practice if it’s really slow

last Tuesday I was playing 2 balls at once and was playing quicker than the twosome in front. I finally caught up on the 9th tee and they let me through. First ball a low hook that just stayed in bounds. Second glorious shot down the middle. I am good with an audience on the first tee. Hit and miss out on the course.

Isn’t that crazy? What do we do to ourselves that we block ourselves from just swinging on those ill-fated first attempts…?

I tried to hold the face more open on the 2nd one and it worked. Learned from the first one.
