So even if you live in a climate where you’re able to play golf year round, there is still probably a time of the year where the weather and course conditions means you probably won’t be able to shoot your best scores. Also, it’s just fun to go out every once and a while with a different intention than a low score just to change the perspective.
So what are some things you do to change things up during play? There are definitely the reduced set challenges (like 3-6 clubs), playing irons only, and etc. Any thing else you do either within your group or on your own?
I’m hoping to get useful practice in on simulators this winter… I should probably do more “play for fun” activities in general, though!
Here in Adelaide I can play year round. At 400m altitude the course gets more rain than down on the plains beneath the course. In winter the course can get very muddy with a few unofficial lakes springing up. Under those conditions you get found out if you are a player that gets ball first or not. Fat shots go nowhere. People say the course plays around 4 shots harder under those conditions. You just have to accept that and long for warm summer days when the ball flies further and you get loads of run.
Bet lots of dinero
Try and birdie every hole on the course
Try and eagle 2/4 par 5’s
I like going to a Par 3 (well I actually like that any time during the year) but with just a few old wedges to work on different distances and targets.
I head South in the Winter so I have no off season. But I typically take a month or so off once or twice a year. It helps me to heal any nagging aches and pains, clears my mind, and any bad habits that creeped into my swing tend to be forgotten by the time I resume play…
