I’m going to deflect the thread a little (I hope this is OK). There are a lot of great golf courses discussed in the thread, I’m a little envious of many of the places mentioned. But the question asks about the “Best Place” rather than the best course. Does that bring anything different to mind? I know for me that the surroundings of the course can impact my impression of the day, whether its the scenery of the area (mountains south of Killarney in Ireland, ocean at Pebble Beach, airport next to Prestwick), or the city (town, village, etc) where the course is located. This is one reason I tried to describe my St Andrews experience, my enjoyment of my rounds at the Old Course went far beyond the golf course itself.
Blue lakes in Idaho is pretty awesome… it’s in the valley of the snake river canyon and includes a view of where evil knievel attempted to jump the canyon.
Also, the lakes are Disney land blue, but natural… just a gorgeous place to play golf… (the course itself is a little gimmicky and includes a par 3 with a huge lateral drop)
Dave, going by that Olympic Club and San Francisco was great. I mean the neatest place to visit outside of PVGC was Clementon Lake Amusement Park which is now closed permanently and is being dismantled or Harper’s Irish Pub…not exactly an exhilarating cultural experience. I mean we all love Augusta National, but outside of the course, I wouldn’t call that a place to take it all in. I’m envious of anyone who has been able to visit the birthplace of golf. I can’t fathom being able to visit Old Tom Morris Golf shop. Incredible
If you’re a bit wild off the tee, you can visit Old Tom’s shop with a hooked drive on #1 (OK, I really mean one off the inside of the heel), or a sliced drive on #18.
A golf trip with your dad, anywhere, is fun. Good luck.
I’d be very inclined to worry about 18 myself then,That’s my miss windshield wiper!
