14 Clubs: Bag Building Strategy

I agree with an on-line fitter who said you don’t need 14 clubs if you only drive the ball 220 yards. Yep, that’s me and I have only 12 clubs, which include 3 wedges. I cannot credibly argue that my distance miss on approach shots is the result of the bag set up. In the bag: Driver, 4w, 3h, i5 – i9, 46*, 50*, 56*, putter.

My bag has changed through the years, but in general it works for me and depending on the weather or course I’m going to play I do tweak the bag. This is my current bag. Adams 9088 UL Draw 9.5* 46.5" 240-250 my driver only weighs 290 grams or a tad over 10oz., 3W 13.5* 43" 220-230, Hybrid 18* 210-220, 7W 22* 195-205, 5i 26* 185-190, 6i 30* 175-180, 7i 34* 165-170, 8i 38* 150-160, 9i 42* 145-150, PW 46* 120-130, GW 50* 110-115, SW 54* 80-105, LW 60* 75, Putter Rossa Daytona 6 37" slight oversize grip 4* loft agsi insert and I love it for distance control. I can push my clubs to get a little more or grip down to take a little off. I can and have played 6500 yd courses comfortably…but after that I start to push it. The in general 4* of increments is about a 10yd difference. I use GP Jumbo 2.0 grips. I just reshafted all my irons this year to TT DG U100s.

Yardages for my new irons… my wedge-9 iron gaps are weird… I’m also creeping into my 4 iron distance with my 5 iron.

Nice distances and gapping. Seriously: you’re like 2 clubs ahead of me, and that only if I hit them well.

Where does your 4I fall, and might a 4H/9W or some-such give you enough of a boost over your present 4I? I apologize for not remembering, as I know you’ve mentioned it here before, but what makes up the rest of your bag?

No wonder you were so interested in short-game, 1/2 and 3/4 shots, if you fly your Gap Wedge 124 and PW 141…

Sub70 699 utility… I was pretty tired after figuring out my gaps, so I wasn’t hitting it great… will need to see if I need to fill the gap.

Might just get another 699 in a lower loft.
